As I sit here unable to work and feeling miserable and miserably depressed; I was thinking about some of the last gigs I did before having to come to North Carolina from South Florida due to my health.

A couple months before moving (which at the time I thought was just going to be 2 weeks) :( sigh… One of my friends called me up and on literally no notice asked me if I would film his cover band that same night. He said he’d throw me a few hundred dollars to do it because they needed a promo video of one of their live performances so they could hopefully get a manager and thus more shows.

I didn’t mind helping him out, but I knew I wasn’t going to get paid to edit (which is much more work - a week’s worth as it turned out).

I called up another friend of mine (and production partner “Sonny”) and said I’d pay him to be a 2nd camera operator as there would only be one take for each song and another camera angle is a good idea especially if you’re editing. You can’t cut from the same angle, it’s not only unprofessional, but even to an untrained eye, it would look ‘off’.

It was about 5pm and we had to be at the show by 7pm, leaving no time to set up professional lights or anything; it was truly run and gun off the cuff style; point and shoot basically with a couple of DSLR’s, but we made it work. It was outdoors and yes, of course it rained… we did get enough footage though between showers for me to put something together. No gig is without its challenges!

That’s one of the things I love about working with Sonny and my other production partner Fernando. I’ve teamed up with all sorts of people over the years, but when the 3 of us work together, we just click; things are effortless and we creatively feed off of one another. Back in Florida we’re known as The 3 Amigo’s. :)

After the video was completed and I got the ok from the lead singer, I received a call 2 weeks later. The band wanted to thank me because the video apparently helped them get management and all of a sudden their gigs tripled. I wasn’t expecting such immediate or positive results, particularly due to how rushed it all was, but it made me feel good. It’s an awesome feeling when a client (regardless of budget) is happy with your work.

The ‘friend’ rate does not apply to everyone! :) :)

Here’s the vid.

Kudos to you!

That's brilliant - well done! It looks really professional (although I'm not so sure about Tricia's singing at some points😳). It's great they let you know as well.

I completely agree, some songs she's on, but other times she's noticeably flat... I have no control over that though, lol.
