Days Like These

Awesome workout song. The tempo changes work perfectly on an elliptical, moving from the higher resistance slower parts to the higher paced parts of the song.
RIP John Wetton.

Armed
I am officially armed (as defined by the Dude Handbook - one handgun, one long gun, one silent kill weapon) for the first time since my teens. One tends to get sloppy when the government provides you with weapons. I had a long conversation with my armorer about chamber pressures and clearances. I’m good.

Father’s Day
So Father’s day was to be at my folk’s second favorite restaurant - Anna’s Waters Edge. It is on the way to the beach. A rustic sort of place, and as the name implies right at the water’s edge. Plan was to meet at 1330. My nephews son was graduating from preschool (and when in the holy hell did that become a thing?) so it was a combo deal.

At 1130 I was sitting on my couch, drinking coffee, watching Sharyl Attkisson when my phone rang. Sister telling me that we have moved up the timeline. I am fairly good with timelines. Sudden last minute changes I am not so good with. Everyone was on their way to Anna’s and I was sitting on my couch in gym shorts and a tank top. Unshowered.

I almost bagged from the date. But got my ass in gear and showered and shaved and dressed and drove the 45 minutes to Anna’s only to arrive as the same time as everyone else.

Mmm. The math doesn’t work.

I had a fried clam basket. Unremarkable. And managed to hold off the urge for peanut butter pie, which everyone else ordered. I had black coffee instead, which is a sorry substitute.

Nephew, his son and girlfriend popped up and left. My Uncle, sister and me split the check. And I was on the road again.

I got tricked into joining Audible again. I thought I was getting a free download, didn’t realize my Audible Account was attached to my Amazon account.

Anyway I downloaded a trilogy of post-apocalyptic books that revolve around the world immediately following a massive EMP that takes out all electronics. Recurring theme in that genre.

So on the way back from the ocean, I set the cruise control and listened to the book. I was peaceful.

This morning I was up at 430am. You know it is time to get up when the sun is up and you realize you are staring at the wall.

I stripped the bed, something I usually do on Sunday, but with Father’s day as a distraction I was distracted.

So I strip the bed, gather other laundry and head down to start the laundry. I go back to the bedroom to get another set of sheets. I have specialty sheets. The California King requires them.

The left side of my dresser is “my stuff.” The right side of the dresser is a grab bag, but mostly sheets.

Except the third drawer. That was Audrey’s drawer. PJs and lingerie and heels.

I opened that drawer and she was back in my head. I even pulled out the PJs and smelled them. they don’t smell like anything now. Maybe dust.

I barely think about my Xs anymore. But I can’t get Audrey out of my head.

Once the washer was running I sat down and turned on NETFLIX. I was watching an episode of “Blue Bloods.” I love the overhead shots of NYC - they always make it look so pretty. My one experience with the city was two stops at the Port Authority bus depot in 1980. My brain can’t quite reconcile the pretty aerial shots of Manhattan with the smell of dogshit, urine and rotting garbage I experienced so long ago.

Erin Cummings was playing the part of a wife who was an abusive relationship with her ex-husband. She was full redhead in the first few scenes, and the camera was locked on her face. Something about her face and her eyes.

If you ever watch a movie or TV show with me, unlikely I know, and you hear me whisper “So sweet.” You will know I am smitten.

So. I do what I do, and looked her up.

She was interviewed by M&F at one point. After this quote I fell in love. Well as much as you can fall in love with someone you have never met.

“I’m attracted to intellectual types who can talk about books or take me to a play, but I also like a man who isn’t afraid to have testicles. There’s a chasm nowadays between super macho men and guys who throw like girls. But it’s sexy when a guy can cook a really good meal, as well as fix the car and take care of things in the bedroom.” Erin Cummings, M&F

Tomorrow is the last day of ground school. Which means it is going to be a pizza party and a shoot-the-shit-fest.

Then. The angst comes back. Because I can’t get access to half of my flying funds until my birthday in August.

Which means I have to access whatever discipline I had in the Navy and settle in to study 4 hours a day.

Because when I finally start flying again, I am going to be the biggest pain in that flight schools ass. I have three fucking years to get this done.

But you will be airborne again !!!

Duke Deleted user ⋅ June 20, 2017

Indeed! The hardest part is the bridge from what I have to pay for and what the VA will pay for.

Deleted user Duke ⋅ June 21, 2017

I can imagine. I have read how expensive it is but I think you were meant for it .

Ah yes, the NYC Port Authority bus terminal, remember it well. I especially remember being watched standing at a urinal in the men's room. Damn creepy.

2 long guns (both Remingtons) and a Colt .38 detective special here.
I don't care for the Colt - nasty kick.

I tried Audible - can't sit still to listen to books unless I'm in the car.

Duke gattaca ⋅ June 21, 2017

I hear you on the kick. My P228 is a 9MM, same size bullet but double the barrel pressure. I carried the same weapon when I was in the Navy, but truth be told I am not a great shot with el pistole any more. After I sight in the AR-15 we'll see. I was an expert shot in Army ROTC, but that was 37 years ago.

I on;y listen to the Audible books in the car, sometimes on the beach. Sitting on my couch listening to a book would drive me crazy.

In this PC day and age, Ms. Cummings was quite ballsy with her comment about "guys who throw like girls"! I bet she took some flack for that...from both camps! And how in the world are you going to let her know that she needn't search another day for the perfect man she described? 😉

Duke Pintador ⋅ June 21, 2017

Alas, Ms Cummings is MRS Degnan. Dang!

So in answer to my last comment, next steps you will be flying .
