I had a silly idea in the car the other day whilst shuffling through my ipod which is full of really random stuff... It ranges from stuff I go running with, to things I use when I'm lecturing on music, to my son's sleep music and stories, to country, to jazz, to rock, to pop and then back again. It's a very mixed bag, but most of the music on there has some sort of story behind why I love it.

So for example, Elton John's "Rocketman" came on the radio whilst I was driving along the Pacific Coast Highway having spent the last 6 months traveling around the world having quit my job with the Evil Corporation. I was burned out, frazzled, sick of everything and capable of doing precisely nothing. I had been bumming around staying with family members and doing a bit of babysitting occasionally to pay my way round the world. Never once in those 6 months had I felt any kind of pull to go home, or even to speak to anyone - it was a beautiful day, the song came on and the words "I miss the earth so much, I miss my life" just hit me and I found there were tears streaming down my face and I pulled over, called my mum from the nearest phone box - I booked my ticket home that afternoon.

So there's my story behind coming home... But there are a million stories triggered by music. The idea behind this prosebook is to give a title or an idea and to get everyone to share their chosen piece of music. e.g. it might be "song that reminds you of travel" or "Song that reminds you of your dad"...

Please feel free to share your fave songs that remind you of travel below...

Your six months of travelling around the world sounds like a very interesting experience. Were you doing gigs of housesitting?

A bit of that - I did 2 months in Italy on the coast babysitting, then a couple of weeks in Tenerife sorting holiday lets, then off to Chicago for a week staying with friends, followed by Alaska with some family for 2 weeks, and I traveled down the coast San Francisco and LA for the last wee while popping in to see my sister in Sacramento for a bit... In LA I met up with the family I'd babysat for and did another fortnight there and another one in London. It was an interesting trip. My brain needed it!

You know what, I am half way through writing on what songs/bands mean something to me & why. Will have to post it soon.

My response to this would be the longest ever I think! I should write an entry with it xXx

I like Dolly Parton's "It's All Wrong, But It's Alright" coz it came on my MP3 as I was walking to the bus to go on my 1st date with Husband, I actually started laughing as the words "who knows it might last for life" were sang as there really was only the intention of a night of fun at that point.
