I woke up at 5:30 a.m. Rue was yawning while I reached for the alarm clock. I laid there about another five minutes. Show I get up, can’t I just lay here. I’d love to sleep in, just one day. I slowly got out of bed, stumbling with my first steps. I made my way to the coffee pot… Oh coffee pot, how I do love thee!
While the coffee started making, I walked into the shower and started the water. Rue came in behind me as I got undressed and into the shower. She sat outside pawing the curtain until I let her in and began getting her wet and soaping her up quickly. Weirdest dog I’ve ever owned, decides when she wants bathed about twice a week… I bathed her turned off the water and dried her off so she would let me shower in peace. I got to shower and wash my hair. The water felt nice and seemed to loosen up my tight muscles. Nervous for my first day…
I got out of the shower, wrapped myself in a towel and proceeded to the coffee pot. Rue watched me as I poured my coffee and added sugar and creamer. She stomped impatiently. I looked at her and smiled, “You got to pottie baby?” I grabbed my clothes and dressed in a hurry, grabbed my coffee and headed out the door so Rue could do her morning thing. We walked around back as usual and I let her strut in the grass, it was a little chilly. Rue hurried her business and came back to me perkily. I clipped her leash and walked her around the hotel back to the entrance. We walked back to our room.
I finished getting ready. Grabbing my case after I finished my coffee. “Well Rue, our day begins.” I grabbed her some treats for good behavior moments and shoved them in my pockets. We left for our new position at the Buckhannon Medical Examiner’s office.
I got into my car with Rue and turned the ignition, before I noticed the note....
“You should leave, don’t stay. This will only hurt you.”
Typed. Not hand-written. Personal and not… Hm… My head is already braining as I put on the gloves and bag the evidence, not even folded, just placed on the windshield under the wiper… Finger-prints!!! I got out my kit and started to work. I cracked the windowns for Rue so I could work and she could sniff the cool air. I worked quickly and just in case, I took the fingerprints from the car doors as well.
When I arrived at the station, I walked Rue in on her leash. I stopped at the receptionist desk, “Hello, can I please see Jefferson?”
“He doesn’t have time this morning, Ms. Wolfe. Is there something I can help you with?” She asked snidely.
“Yeah, you can get me Jefferson.” I replied with a smile.
“I said he can’t see you today. He doesn’t go on your schedule, you go on his and he is booked this morning.” She got cockier as she spoke.
But this time Rue was looking at her like she was retarded. “Look lady, Jefferson is going to want to see what I have before I get to the lab. I really just need him to know what is going on.” I said still trying to be nice.
“Why do you have a dog with you?” She looked disgusted.
“Rue here,” I patted her head. “Is a service animal. She is registered and goes everywhere with me. A partner if you will. She’s a trained cadaveer dog too. One of the best.”
“To each their own. Dog as a partner, I’ve never heard of such a thing. You’d think it would contaminate evidence.”
“As I said, she is a trained service animal.” I stressed she as much as I could, “Now, if I could please see Jefferson.”
“I told you he is booked.” She said hatefully.
“Fine,” I pulled out my phone and called his cell. “Hey Brad, your receptionist won’t let me in to see you. There was a note on my car this morning, I got fingerprints pictures the normal deal… Yeah, I need your signature to do the lab work. Yeah, I’ll just walk past her next time.” I walked past her like she didn’t exist. I decided that would just be the best thing to do from now on.
“Bitch!” She sneered.
Rue grumble past her. I turned on a dime, “Look cunt, I don’t know what your problem is with me. Honestly, I don’t care what your problem is. I’m here to work a case, not to flirt with Jefferson if that is your problem. But holding up police business isn’t good for Chief Jefferson. I’d keep that in mind. I’d also change your attitude, if you want to keep your job. ”
“Your going to get me fired? Your the cunt!” She almost shouted.
“I didn’t say I was going to have your job, I just don’t think everyone will have the same outlook as I have about you. Eventually your going to cunt mode someone and they are going to tell Jefferson and he will have your job. I don’t have to do a thing.” I walked on to Jefferson’s door.
I closed the door behind me, “Some secritary you have there Jefferson.”
“What did she do now?” He asked already irritated, “She doesn’t even make a decent cup of coffee.
I laughed. “I wouldn’t let her near my drink, she’d poison me.”
He looked a little caught off, “No, what happened?”
“She pissed me off so I told her she was a cunt.” I stopped for a second. “Then I told her she needed to change her attitude before she cunt modes on someone else and they get her fired.”
“That was the last straw, I don’t know what has gotten into her. She was an amazing secretary for the first four months and then bam, down hill running.” He said, thinking back.
“Don’t fire her because of me. I don’t make friends easy.” I laughed. “I wasn’t exactly nice, but I did try… So can we get this started?” I handed him the forms I’d completed while collecting evidence.
He signed, “So what happened exactly?”
“Its in the report. I came out to my truck getting ready to come here. I found it under the windshield wiper. So I’m hoping they left me some dna or a fingerprint.” I showed him the note I had put in an evidence bag.
“Why didn’t you call it in?” Chief Jefferson asked sounding a bit curious.
“It wasn’t an emergency. I didn’t feel threatened. And no it wasn’t caught on camera.” I did remember to ask the reception about the cameras and where they were located.
“Fair enough,” he replied.
“I’m off to the lab… can you point me in some direction?” I half smiled and started for the door.
Chief Jefferson pointed me in the right direction, assuring me that his team would do everything by the book and we would get things under-control. That there seemed to be no reason to feel threatened yet, but he wanted to switch my hotel just in case at my leisure as long as I was covert.
I agreed.
I dropped my evidence off at the lab and proceeded to “my medical department.” TIME TO LOOK AT DEAD BODY!!!! I always get a little excited!
