Isabel in General

Isabel is waiting
In a room of many shadows
Her eyes like flashing diamonds
Shining brightly from the sea
Her hair in silken tresses
Like a robe around her shoulders
Hiding tantalising treasures
That the sun has never seen

That song seems almost like an attempt to re-write Simon and Garfunkel’s “April, Come She Will.” It was one of my favorites when I was much, much younger.

Oddly enough, Isabel was the last hurricane I rode out. That was in Maryland when I owned a McMansion. X2’s mom was ill and she was in Alabama, so me and the kids hunkered down.

For my son I think it was a good experience.

To a degree I believe that children should be taught early on that there are a lot of things you can’t control. All you can do is mitigate the risk and be as prepared as best you can.

I had a month’s worth of food and water socked away in the freezer. Yes, the water was stored in the cabinet freezer because it served dual duty of keeping the freezer cold after we lost power, and served as drinking water as it melted. I also had two trashcans full of water in the bathroom. To flush the toilet when we lost our water pump when we lost power. Lessons I learned at 13.

Hermine is making its way up the coast. Maine is still in the cone of uncertainty. I would have gone to the beach today, but it was very chilly. And it is labor day weekend. By Thursday the local traffic was out of control It never even got into the 70s today. Summer is coming to a close.

Maybe one more mow of the back yard, then it is time to winterize the lawn mower. And prep the snow blower. Gotta love living in Maine. According to the old farmer’s almanac this winter is going to be brutally cold, but only average in snowfall. That magazine seems to be strangely accurate considering they are probably using chicken bones to make their predictions.

Well. Other than that, all is good up here in the job desert. I don’t really have any complaints other that being bored out of my skull. If I ever get a job I am going to keep it, because if this is retirement, you can have it!

And she whispers as she sadly slips away
Then she smiles because there’s nothing left to say
And she takes with her the sadness and the sun

Those are excellent skills to know . I read about prepping often , just in case and keep some supplies. My husband thinks I am crazy but I say , you never know .
