I believe that I may have just taken down a person on a FB group page who claimed to be an authority on clinical research and who was condemning a particular HPV vaccine that is being provided to young woman in Ireland through schools called Gardasil.
My views are that this article is probably correct:
But I’m sympathetic with parents that don’t know whether to refuse this vaccine for their child based on the anecdotal flimsy evidence that there’s a definite link with seriously adverse reactions.
I bore with the woman as she talked about the immunity granted to the pharmaceutical industry in the US. I asked her to show me a source and she told me to google it. I did and what I found was really a contradiction of her claim. The immunity has to do with vaccines to children only. And it has to do with allowing the prevalence of important vaccines to children. A quick read made me think that there were steps taken to stop people trying to sue the pharmaceuticals for alleged reactions (serious) to vaccines that were long proven not to have adverse effects… I don’t know and I didn’t claim what that meant beyond her argument. She’d thrown a nebulous cloud of “immunity” over the entire field of why “Big Pharma” was trying to damage young women. I had to feed her a particular act from the 80s. She agreed in response was it and threw me a specific date suggesting to me she’d just googled the act after I mentioned it.
She said the media was controlled. I agree pharmaceuticals have lobby groups but I wanted to be specific about this vaccine and which pharmaceutical it was etc. She didn’t seem to know and the article above suggests media was overly-sympathetic against the vaccine. Rubbish reporting and irresponsible journalism were mentioned. I agree.
But then she really did it. She mentioned autism. And bang. There’s no way anyone familiar with clinical research would tell me that vaccines are related to autism. This one has been firmly found to be a lie created by a total fraud.
So I said that. And I said I that THIS was the problem. People like her were willing to imply if not outright lie that they had authority or expertise (she said she had an MSc in the field) could hide behind their facebook account and scare people into believing they know things that they do not know.
And after it all, I feel guilt, proud, and disillusioned all at the same time. What a b1tch. I mean her, not me.
