What would you cut? in The Manifesto

Okay - let’s assume that all cost efficiencies and nonsense like MPs claiming spurious expenses have been cut… You need to find more savings in the budget and the only thing to cut are frontline services: What goes?

So do we exit Europe? Do we get rid of the armed forces and beef up the police to compensate? Do we maybe put MPs on a pro rata rate for days/hours they actually work? Libraries? Leisure services? Something in the NHS which you think shouldn’t be funded? Benefits somewhere? Education?

Putting MPs on a pro rata rate sounds good to me...or at least a fixed rate and not the ridiculous amount they currently get. And no increases when nobody else is getting any either! Less money for the Queen? Would you keep the Royals actually?
I'd like to stay in the EU. The way the Tories are going I wouldn't like to know what sort of things they'll bring in if we do leave.

I toyed with the idea of only letting MPs be paid relating to the average UK wage... I'm not sure if that would encourage more payola, but I think it might make them think of the common man and realise what normal people get paid.

I'm okay with the royals actually, it was their money to start with, so if they took it back, we'd actually lose cash. I suspect when Charles takes over that a lot of the hangers on will have their perks cut.

well MPs definitely don't need to be paid almost £75k plus all the other perks!!
That CEO guy who just got paid a boatload of money (BP?) and the 70m man as well - errrr no.

Actually one MP did do this with his wage:

I'd start be reversing the tax cuts that were introduced in the budget - even though they were favourable to me. Why cut taxes when you desperately need more money? Also I would up petrol duty while petrol is cheap. It can always come down later if the oil price rises. xx

Camdengirl Complicated Disaster ⋅ April 20, 2016

They did seem a little odd... I'm not sure I desperately need the extra £20 a month or whatever the next tax free allowance equates to if it means cutting proper stuff.

Complicated Disaster Camdengirl ⋅ April 20, 2016

Exactly! And when someone normally as right wing as Genghis Kahn like me starts thinking that way then something is definitely wrong!! Xx

MPs pro-rata for sure.
Managerial posts in the NHS and police seem like a heck of a waste of space and money too.
Bad-Friend (NHS manager) loves it as she has a job for life and excellent pension but even she admits they need 1/4 as many managers and they are all terribly cosseted.
And as for top police, they come straight out of uni - they should work their way up, it would reduce resentment in the lower ranks as well as save money.
Also pay teachers a decent wage, spend more on them and allow them to teach for love - they won't all be dropping out after a year or two which will save a fortune on training and advertising. You could also employ school administrators for about £9 per hour to fill in the boxes head teachers are having to do. And of course get rid of SATS that would save a fortune and allow teachers to actually teach which again would keep them in the job.

teach for love of teaching I mean, instead of teaching to pass exams
