Robert Redford is one of those All-American men and watching him navigate the Indian Ocean in a little boat you're pretty sure has no business being that far away from land is fascinating. From the very first minute, you find yourself saying, "Oh, that's not good," and you continue from that point on second-guessing this old man, and you're probably half-right. Why is he in the middle of the ocean to begin with? 1700 miles from Sumatra with no lifeline? Dumbass. (he has a radio, but doesn't appear to speak the Felipino or Chinese or Indian. He just sort of comes across as a can-do cocky American who bites off more than he can chew. And yet, you root for him, because somewhere deep inside, you wish you could do that. Sort of the same way you felt when watching "Into the Wild", except somehow taking a stupidly out-of-the-way solo pleasure cruise seems less crazy than hiking hundred of miles into the Alaskan wilderness. He has to learn celestial navigation and I was impressed with his ability to grasp it (but, I mean, you're out sailing by yourself... you should've probably known how to use the stars before heading out into the Indian Ocean to "live the life" to begin with). You know how in movies when you see a shipping vessel, everything's immediately okay? Apparently, in this version of life, those ships are run by robots. This guy has just about the shittiest luck on the planet.
