After the deluge in The View from the Terrace

After the deluge on Monday, followed by more rain on Tuesday after just a brief respite, we had two days of sunshine. It was so good to see it yesterday morning after long cloudy wet days almost continually since before Christmas that I went down to the local shops just to be outside. Of course, I visited the local charity shops. I found a pretty plant holder and several books. Someone in this part of Cardiff seems to have the same taste in books as I do as I always find great books to read when I come here; two by Jodi Picoult, who I love, one by Torey Hayden who writes about her time as a special needs teacher, and Nella Last’s Peace. I was very excited to find that as I read Nella Last’s War a while back. It is the diary of a woman who lived in Barrow in Furness in World War Two. This is the follow up about her life just after the war, around the time I was born.

I had intended to pop into the Coop just for some milk and half a cucumber, they didn’t have one on Monday, but Cat said she wanted a few things so I ended up with a bag full.

Later in the afternoon we walked down to Charity Shop Road, as Cat calls it. There are around 8 charity shops there. There was a lovely calf length black coat, but unfortunately, it was a size too small. I didn’t find anything else but enjoyed looking around. We went for a coffee and Cat kept going on about the man at a nearby table who looked like a terrorist. I took a quick look and he did have a strange look in his eye. I wished she would stop saying it as we were sitting in a cafe in a big multi cultural city, also Cat often has a sixth sense about things. Eventually he got up and walked out, I think he was just a troubled young man.

We are going down to the city centre for late night shopping this afternoon. Cat has a gift token for a shop she doesn’t normally like so I am going to see if they have anything for me there and then I can give her the money. I’m going home after lunch tomorrow. If this sunshine lasts I might even get my garden tidied up for spring.

Half a cucumber? You can actually buy just a portion of a vegetable? :) I hope you find something you like at that shop.

I love thrift stores ( I think that is what we call charity shops here )

Isn't it lovely to think of how pleased Nella would have been to see her writing in print? She was such a good writer - I read all of her diaries but thought it such a shame that she never lived to see how much joy they brought to people.
