The crowd began to gather round.
Paramedics took my indifferent corpse
to an ambulance… 10 minutes late.

A pretty girl had dropped her red roses,
Petals now blown by the cold wind
Onto my face with pale eyes wide open.
The police were questioning the woman,
“What happened to this man, miss?
“Why is he dead on Valentine’s Day?”

“I don’t know,” she replied.
“But it is indeed the tragedy of all tragedies.”
“Some people are that unlucky,” said a banker
His tie bright red for Valentine’s Day.
“Some get robbed on Christmas,”
Some get burned on New Year’s Eve,
And some get death
on Valentine’s Day.”

And the girl nodded sighing,
The police shook their heads frowning,
As paramedics took my corpse
To an ambulance… 10 minutes late.

“But what’s the cause of death?” asked a salesman
“Why would such a healthy man,
no injuries as I can tell,
Die on Valentine’s Day?”

“Some people are that unlucky,” said the banker
Some get food poisoning through their birthday cake,
Some through their Halloween dinner,
And some through their chocolates
On Valentine’s Day.”

And the girl nodded sobbing,
The police shook their heads frowning,
As paramedics took my corpse
To an ambulance… 10 minutes late.

“But why would anyone poison this man,” asked a waitress
“So ordinary and pleasant-faced
on this special, Valentine’s Day?”

“Some people are that unlucky,” said the banker
“Some get found out on their anniversary,
Some get found out on their wedding,
Some get found out — for better or for worse —
on Valentine’s Day.”

And the girl nodded sobbing,
The police shook their heads frowning,
As paramedics took my corpse
To an ambulance… 10 minutes late.

“So this poor fella cheated?” asked a janitor
“Cheated his love for so long?
Made up stories so complex?
To hide his lie so dirty
to continue his affair so wild
And now he’s face-down on the pavement
Dead as a dodo on Valentine’s Day?”

“Probably,” said the banker
“Some cheat at the start,
Some cheat at the end,
Some cheat ’til they die grimly
On Valentine’s Day.”

And the girl nodded crying,
The police shook their heads frowning,
As paramedics took my corpse
To an ambulance… 10 minutes late.

“No, no, no!” the girl blurted out,
Red roses petals on her toes,
Red roses petals on my face,
“This man was not poisoned, cheated, found out,
Then killed this Valentine’s Day!”

The police turned their heads,
And every onlooker stared.
“This man had a happy face
till he stopped on this cursed spot.
We travelled on the lift together
From the top of the building together,
And he kept smiling at me.

And I asked his name, and he asked mine,
And we walked out the double doors
To the street still smiling
As people carrying red roses passed by
Without a care in the world.”
“But right here on this spot,
My ex-boyfriend turned up,
Carrying the largest bouquet of flowers I’d seen in my life.
And my ex-boyfriend stepped up,
He kissed me on the lips,
The longest he ever kissed me in years and years.
When I opened my eyes, this man was standing there in tears.
And as I dropped my roses,
He collapsed,
Dead — as I feared.”
And the girl broke down on the ground,
Misery in her heart.
“So that’s what happened!” said the banker
His bright red tie quivering in the cold wind,
“Some people are that unlucky.
Some die of disease
some die by their own hand
some die of love
On Valentine’s Day.”
