Boo, vacation block is over. It went by so fast! But I do feel semi-human again instead, so at least it was restful.
As of tomorrow, I’ll have exactly 5 more months of school as long as nothing weird happens. Kind of can’t believe it.
I start a Dentistry externship tomorrow. I was supposed to have a Dentistry rotation at school but they’ve been having issues with the Dentistry department for quite some time. About 5 weeks ago, I was informed that my Dentistry rotation had been cancelled and that I’d have to find an externship elsewhere to fulfill it. It made me really angry and frustrated. First off, when was I supposed to find the time to call all these places to try to secure a position when I’m working my butt off with little down time consistently during business hours when these practices are more or less only open business hours? It was my school’s screw up, not mine, and therefore should have been their responsibility to figure something out. Secondly, Dentistry is a requirement for those of us who are small animal track. Our Dentistry education should be consistent among us. It’s really frustrating that we didn’t get the full Dentistry elective class and it’s frustrating that we don’t get a consistent rotation. Dentistry is an important part of our careers and involves a lot of skills we need to learn! Bleh.
But, anyway, I managed to find an externship at a local specialty/emergency clinic with a dentist who was the last resident to go through my school’s program. Student’s spoke highly of her and, when I spoke with her on the phone, she seemed really nice. If the Dentistry service has a slow day, I can choose to study or hop on over to the hospital’s emergency department and hang out there. Unfortunately, this place is not a teaching hospital like my school is, so I’m not sure how much hands-on dentistry experience I’ll get. Then again, on the rotation at school, students only did things like dental exams and cleanings, which I’ve done when working as a technician, and only observed things like surgical extractions, so I’m not sure I’m actually missing out all that much.
Bleh, I’m anxious. I’m always anxious to start a new rotation/externship as it’s kind of like starting a new job every time, but it’s especially hard after time off. Plus, I’m anxious about how I did on my NAVLE. And my upcoming Surgery rotation, which sounds just awful and scary. Ehhhh.
