So today ended my longest work week ever, 63 hours answering phones, taking e-mails and chats. The system kept pushing me back and forth between retail and my normal position, business customer service. It really is an awesome job. I get the pleasure of using my mad CSI skills, without ever having to see or photograph a body.
It truly is amazing, the ways you interact with different personalities. One minute you have someone raising hell, the next is someone nice as can be. And you have to know to quickly adjust to whoever you have on the line. No call is the same, and I have some great ones, and a few bad ones. My first call ever, I panicked, put the guy on hold, looked up 30 seconds later, and realized in actuality 11 minutes had passed, and the caller had hung up. That set my confidence for the new few weeks. My numbers were awful, I stuttered like crazy. I felt like an idiot. But I stuck with it. And now, I really help people and listen, and people truly appreciate that. People just want to talk, and know they are heard. And that is so rare in this day and time. (Most people just walk around zoned out on the phones all the time.
I sucked it up, and definitely worked all the hours I was allowed. My job is having a contest, and the more OT you grab, the more of a chance you have to win some great prizes. Grand prize being $2000.00. I can do this, for a shot at that. Especially right here at Christmas time....pppsshhhttt, I got this!!
So today’s shift was 13 hours of non stop, thank you for calling blah blah blah....now my jaw is numb, my ears heart, and I’m wide awake and everyone in my house is asleep. I missed a baby shower, my son’s first Basketball game, I missed Thanksgiving, and I will miss my youngest son’s first Christmas performance at school. Bright side, is we will have utilities on and Santa will be alright to all these people that live here.
Tomorrow is my only day off, and I will enjoy every minute of it.
I also got great news. When I asked my manager, who rocks by the way, if I should apply for a permanent job that is available, she told me no, just hold tight, keep my numbers good and she would get me in. That is a blessing and answered prayer for me.
I’m in such a different place then I was this time last year, and this is a good place to be.
