Tomorrow’s the last day of my externship. Boo. I’d much rather stay another two weeks than do another Internal Medicine rotation.

Dr. B, the practice owner and doctor who is in charge of my externship, told me she recommended me to a practice that’s looking to hire a new graduate late spring/early summer. Pretty awesome/terrifying. It makes the whole job searching thing more real. If I’m feeling extra brave, I’ll contact the clinic and see if they’d be open to me shadowing sometime during my vacation block to see if it’s a place I would actually feel comfortable. Eek! Dr. B said she’d also keep an eye out for more good clinics looking for new graduates. Adult jobs, yikes!

I was asked by another PBer what happens once I’m done with my program. For me, I’ll be looking for a job locally in small animal general practice. My hope is to find a full or near full time job or two part time jobs. Some other students pursue internships which, from what I hear from almost everyone who does one, is miserable despite the knowledge you gain. I’ve also been told that by the time you’re about five years out having done an internship does not really give you an advantage over someone who hasn’t done one if you’re doing general practice. After an internhsip, you can go into practice, pursue a specialty internship, or pursue a residency in a specialty (surgery, dermatology, oncology, internal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, radiology, etc). Someday, if I get bored, I might want to specialize, but right now, general practice sounds perfect. I also really want to pursue Traditional Chinese Medicine in the next few years after I have a good hold on western medicine. A real, adult job is still a very weird concept to me.

Off to eat dinner and sleeeeep. Mmmm…
