PRISON BIRTHDAY in Adventures From Prison

     What does it say about my life when the very first person to wish me Happy Birthday is Heeere’s Johnny? I have no idea how he found out it was my birthday and frankly, I am afraid to ask him for fear of discovering that the voices in his head have been spying on me…or possibly having a couple of beers with the voices in MY head! I’m not sure which one bothers me more. I’d like to think that my voices hang out with a much higher caliber of people, but you never know, I guess.

     Heeere’s Johnny has been spreading his crazy out lately. I’ve had reports of him asking people what Rhett Clark and Butler Gable have to do with the Sound of Music as well as reports of him re-enacting the awkward dinner table scene from the movie AI, while in the chow hall sitting with strangers. His few trips into the library have been fairly uneventful. Turns out, however, he was taken off the compound and put in the SHU yesterday for writing a list of prison workers names in a library book under a supposedly scary list heading. I guess he was rather angry. Now this is all rumors, but given those eyes of his and his general mental state, I believe it is possibly true! Honestly, I’ve never met someone so unstable in my life and hope never to again. But at least he wished me Happy Birthday.

     A lot of guys in prison don’t ever acknowledge their birthdays, but I’m not one of them. I always try to have a good day and to treat myself to something enjoyable. Last night I paid to have pizzas made by one of the “expert” prison pizza makers. It was great. So for an hour we all hung out and gorged ourselves. Another of my friends shares my birthday, so he joined us as well and even brought Little Debbie Santa Brownies for our dessert. Not a fancy party, but enjoyable all the same. So I’m now officially 36 years old. I still haven’t met the majority of my life goals, but I am still making headway on them despite my situation – so that’s something I’m proud of at least. I figure that is more than some people can say even though they are free.
