I got to thinking about all the modern religions based on popular culture. There is Matrixism (from The Matrix franchise), Jediism (from the Star Wars franchise), Dudeism (from The Big Labowski), and even Scientology (from the works of L. Ron Hubbard). But as I began to look, I found nothing from Dune by Frank Herbert. As in, there is not a damn thing. And that is truly a shame given the rich religious and complex moral overtones of the franchise. So as of today, I am founding the religion of Duneism.
I have already begun compiling ideas of this work. I shall begin posting them soon. If anyone out there is a fan, I would love to hear feedback.
I will address this later in a FAQ, but I know one of the first questions to come up is usually, “Is this a ‘serious’ religion?”. I believe firmly in individuality, so it is a matter of personal beliefs. As I see it, how literal to take this is up to the individual believer. A Duneist Christian may see Paul as an archetype of Jesus. Someone else may say Frank Herbert was a prophet and forsaw the coming messianic figure(s) and events. Another may say that the series is Sci-Fi presenting an allegorical/metaphorical/cautionary tale. The themes of Dune pass the religious and deal with many other things such as what it means to be human, the dangers of A.I. and over dependence on technology, conservation of planetary resources, etc. How “serious” the religion is is up to the individual to decide.
