Ha! So I’ve been studying for my boards and the program I’m using likes to have little tips that pop up. The current one is Don’t go it alone! Study with a friend or study at a coffee shop so you continue to feel like a real person.” Too late, VetPrep, too late.

I do like this study program, though. For the most part, it’s all people will use to study and this program has a 98.5% pass rate. It’s much better than trying to go through all my notes. It’s put out by the company that writes the test so the practice questions are in the same type of format, which is nice. I’m not doing as horribly as I thought too! The program has about 5000 practice questions and it shows you how many you’ve completed that you’ve gotten correct. For the longest time, I was using the skip option for ones I didn’t know, so I could at least read the reasoning behind the correct answer. Well, it turns out, skipped question are considered wrong answers, so it was considerably lowering my score. I was at like 25% correct and it was worrying me a lot. Since I’ve stopped using the skip option, I’ve raised my score to 48%, so it’s nice to see that increased. I’ve also recently started doing timed practice exams, and you can choose how many questions you get for each mini-exam. I started at 5 and have moved up to 20 per session, just to slowly build up. The real NAVLE has 7 60 question parts, so I’m working up to that. Anyway, my average score for these questions is 65% which is AWESOME! Especially since the pass score for the NAVLE varies between about 50-65% each year. It just makes me feel like I’m not completely off track and that there’s still room for improvement has I have about 8 weeks until my exam.

Ha I know, this is like the most boring topic in the world. I’m boring myself :P

Finished up my Companion Bird rotation yesterday. Overall, I really liked it. Dr. Redig, our primary teacher for it, is so wonderful. He founded the Raptor Center and has pioneered some interesting research on bird medicine. He’s very sweet and created a really pleasant, laid-back learning environment. I also feel a lot more comfortable with my bird capture and restraint techniques as well as a hand full of basic procedures. I’m also pretty sure I never want to own a bird, at least not a larger parrot. We spent a couple days in a local bird sanctuary and there were so many parrots with heartbreaking stories. They really should not be pets. So few people are capable of really taking care of them well. The people who do, though, are amazing and dedicated. The sanctuary had so many cockatoos. They’re such beautiful birds, but they can be so nasty if not cared for correctly. I ended bonding with one, who was a juvenile and has a problem with feather picking and self mutilation. He’s really sweet and loves to be handled. I held him while my classmate changed the vest-like bandage he wears so he can’t further damage his chest and he was so calm. Afterwards, he just wanted to sit on my lap, rub his head on my legs, and have me rub his head. I’m so glad he, and all the other 80+ birds who live there, are getting good, consistent care.

Ooh! And I still have all my fingers! No parrots snipped them off, so I must have been doing something right :P
