Which movies mean something to you? What do they mean? Is there a reason they stick with you?
Dildo used to ask me my top 5, a hold over from High Fidelity perhaps. I just read a post on Facebook that made me put one of them on, Cabaret. I love, love, love this movie for so many reasons. I love the movie, I love the play, I just love it. It's very powerful and it deals with such serious subject matter in a very real way.
How do we, as people, deal with uncomfortable subjects? We mock them. We make light. We overly sexualize them to take the sting out of it. Cabaret is an exercise in exactly this.
Some of my other favorite musicals in my top 5 are Rent, Guys and Dolls, Grease, and O' Brother Where Art Thou, Le Mis & Phantom. Yes, that's more than 5. That's a combo of best music and best overall work of theatrics within the musical format.
