10 years... in Ponderings of the Universe

I had my 10 year high school reunion last night. High school does not seem like it was that long ago yet at the same time it seems like it happened eons ago.

Predictably, it was awkward, but made much better by going with Kat and Genevieve. We more or less talked to people we were friends and acquaintances with back then though there were a few people we didn’t know so well who wanted to talk on and on. Mostly, they were drunk, which explains a bit :P It was interesting to see how people grew up (or didn’t). I was a little sad that some of the people from my high school group of friends didn’t make it, but I have seen most of them within the past few years, so it wasn’t so bad.

It definitely brought back some weird, nostalgic feelings. For the most part, high school wasn’t so bad for me. I had a fun group of friends, so I usually had someone I liked to sit by in class when we didn’t have assigned seating. We used to have such fun sleepover parties. I miss that. As antisocial as I am, I really do miss having a big group of friends to fall back on and just be part of their lives. I hope that once I’m done with the soul-sucking exhaustion that is school, I’ll have energy and less anxiety to reconnect with some people locally and be a better, more-involved friend to my current friends. Since losing my original vet school class, hence more or less losing my vet school friends, I’ve been really lonely and I’ve been too anxious, tired, awkward, neurotic, etc to even attempt to befriend people in my current class. Then, with rotations being so hectic, it’s been really hard to connect with my other friends consistently. Here’s to being done with school in less than a year and hopefully finding a job that lets me have time to have a life!

In other news, birds. So many birds. As predicted, there has been much busywork. Not quite as much as for my Raptor Center rotation, though, thankfully! I’m currently working on an assignment involving blood smear evaluations. It look me like 2 hours to go through 5 blood smears. Bird blood is so much more confusing than mammal blood! I have no idea what I’m doing :P One lecture on differentiating different types of avian white blood cells does not make for any sort of expertise, so I don’t even know if the differentials I got are correct. My patient is also an owl and apparently they are extra difficult. Whee. So now I’m trying to correlate my findings to this owl’s clinical history. At least my white blood cell count increased right before they decided to euthanize and the necropsy findings are consistent with infection of some sort so…maybe I’m sort of doing this right.

I’m so ready for pizza to get here. Much hungry!
