*sigh* in Site Updates

All right, so this experiment in navigation, based on the majority of feedback I've received, is mostly a failure.

But that's OK. You may have to put up with the current navigation for a few days (need a break from Prosebox and life is crazy), but I do have a better plan.

So there's that.

UPDATE:

I really don't like winter.

Anyway. I have received some interesting feedback. It seems like everyone has their own system of navigation. Reminds me of the old Reese's peanut butter cup commercials.

So I'll put the question out there to anyone who would like to answer: How do YOU read your bookmarks? Front to back? Side to side? One person at a time? While standing on your head?

Cat Mommy December 03, 2013

:( Sorry to frustrate you with us not liking it. Have a good break and take care of yourself.

I've hardly had the chance to even navigate the site myself so I didn't even notice with everything we have going on here... But the one thing is, and not to put more on ya cause you are doing a great job with this site, that when I go to reply to someone I would usually click their name and it would take me to their comment and now it takes me to the Prosebox...easily enough for me I just go back and click on the entry link.

But that's the only thing I noticed. I'm digging the "more bookmarked entries" at the bottom of my each of my bookmarked peeps entries.

simple mind Deleted user ⋅ December 03, 2013

Just click on the entry title above the comment instead, it links to the same thing the user's name used to. :)

Deleted user simple mind ⋅ December 03, 2013

Yeah I figured it out. But I still out of habit click on the name...but that's all. Everything else is all good.

Lobbastah December 03, 2013

Whatever you decide is fine. Just will takes some 'justment. No biggie.

But I just went to delete a note and the button is no longer there. FYI.

Life Is For Living December 03, 2013

The only problem I have with bookmarks right now is -- I would love if they could be highlighted in bold & then when we have read them, they are no longer bold. I usually have limited time on the computer, so I cannot always read all of my bookmarks in one go -- so sometimes I forget who I haven't read yet, who has a new entry from a previous day that I hadn't gotten to.

You are doing a wonderful job. Thank you for keeping us all in the loop, Sir! ^_^

Daisy Mae Life Is For Living ⋅ December 03, 2013

I'm definitely with you on this one! I've missed so many entries from not being able to tell which ones I've read / not read.

ThisIsME Life Is For Living ⋅ December 04, 2013

I what 5th this lol besides that I just open all new entries in a new tab and close after I am done I like having a ton of tabs easier for me

Deleted user ThisIsME ⋅ December 04, 2013

6th on this one but I think it's in the works?

perfunctory December 03, 2013

I agree with the above about bolded bookmarks that haven't been clicked on. Added to that (or separately): is there a way for little notification icons in the bookmarks page that says how many entries are new for each person? Sometimes my bookmarks write 2-3 entries before I have a chance to get to them; it would be nice for a marker of some kind that notifies me that, hey, this person has written three new entries since I've clicked on his/her name.

Otherwise, looks good. Honestly, I read them in the order I desire. I always have a few favorite favorites that get read right away. Others I tend to linger on.

Second vote for this!

Silverstar46 December 03, 2013

Take a break! you earned it, that's for sure!

As for me.. for an example, I was on vacation with limited time on the computer so I didn't read everyone or get all their entries. I like to be able to easily scroll back to the last entry I hadn't read and move forward, and didn't realize there was navigation at the bottom. When I did realize it, like some of the others, I don't usually scroll to the bottom of a person's notes (especially the longer note sections) and I really liked how you had the tabs up top where I could scroll back and forward between the person's entries.

The most productive things come from trial and error. Most of the time you aren't working at it with hundreds of thousands of users breathing down your back. Your site, your rules, but as you said, leave some wiggle room for other ideas. Wilbur and Orville didn't just get up one day and fly across the country. Many take offs and landings and most were crash landing. Change is good, it keeps us talking, and keeps us on our toes. :-D

magicstar December 03, 2013

Personally, I read through one person at a time if I've missed multiple updates. I find it very frustrating that I can't click through one person's journal like before. I was just testing it out, and none of the entries in the bottom boxes were even by the user I was currently reading. That doesn't feel intuitive to me at all.

Teflon Superhero December 03, 2013

I go back to see where the last one I read was, then I was using the buttons at the top to just go to the next entry, then the next, and the next, until there wasn't a next button anymore.

the only thing that irked me about the previous navigation was that there wasn't the next buttons at the bottom of the entry and I'd have to scroll back up to go to the next entry.

Nothing to set things on fire about, though, it'll all be sorted and be lovely when finished, I'm sure! :)

banker chick December 03, 2013

Truthfully, I haven't used the new method of navigating. I find myself using PB like I used OD, reading everyone via the Bookmarks page. It's just habit for me at this point.

Leanne 🌈 December 03, 2013

I read the updated ones hate scrolling all the ways down. As always thank you for your hard work enjoy some R&R.

Flame is Love December 03, 2013

Oldest to newest, unless a favorite favorite updated then I jump to them.

Also, I need nav above the comments. I don't read comments as a rule.

edna million December 03, 2013

I've always tried to read oldest bookmarks to newest (in that, ummmm, other place) and I found the system of one list, with unread entries bolded, to be simple and easy to keep up with. It has been a little hard here to keep up with who I've read already and who I haven't, just because the unread ones don't stand out.

BUT, you get a gazillion gold stars for experimenting and seeing what works and what doesn't, and you are also doing an amazing job with this site. I've been VERY pleased with it, and it just gets better all the time. Enjoy your break, and thanks for this fantastic creation!

Miss Carrie B. December 03, 2013

I like that you're experimenting! It's the only way you'll figure out what works best. I prefer the old way. I read oldest to newest so having that next bookmark button at the top was convenient.

s.q.u.e.a.k December 03, 2013

I'm not sure if it's a new feature but I'm loving the "more bookmarked entries" down the bottom, with previous and next. I like it down the bottom too because it's easy enough to scroll down there. I have to agree with the other's about having a way to know whether you've read an entry or not. :D Loving this site though.

Gangleri December 03, 2013

I actually kinda liked the old way it worked. Navigation of bookmarks at the top of the page was Nifty.

Princess Buttercup December 03, 2013

When I read my bookmarks I start at the first person that updated since I last read, then work my way forward. I liked the previous buttons that we had, but it being at the bottom also works as well.

CountingStars December 03, 2013

Thank you for asking for input and then actually listening. That's worth far more than anything else. Thanks for all the time you put in to this place.

I read from oldest to newest, by author.

Deleted user December 03, 2013

Egads! Guess I didn't notice a change. I had too many folks bookmarked and needed to do some whittling. I can only handle about ten right now. That is manageable no matter what kind of navigation there is. You, m'lord, continue to rock!

Darling V December 03, 2013

I actually like the new navigation, not gonna lie. And I like to read my bookmarks standing on my head, just to put that out there. :D

woman in the moon December 03, 2013

I'm not sure I understood the navigation thing but I'd like to compliment you on the extra entries on the bottom of the current entry. I like seeing them there with the title and the first sentence of so.

I find putting into words - or reading someone else's descriptions of what something looks like or works like difficult. I like it as a mental exercise but it really makes my head hurt.

I guess I'm just old and pre-computer literate.

Etoile Filante December 04, 2013

Just so you know, I think you're fabulous xXx

simple mind Etoile Filante ⋅ December 04, 2013

:) thank you

The way I read: I'll go to my Friends List and click on favourite faves. If they've got just 1 prosebook, I can easily identify what they wrote in chronological order from viewing their list of entries, and I will read from oldest to newest. If they have several prosebooks that they update regularly, I have no way of telling the chronological order of their writings, and simply have to navigate through each prosebook. Then move onto my next favourite fave.

When I've been through my favourite faves, I will check out the Bookmarks list. And read whatever jumps out at me by way of title. Once I'm in one of the entries, I may flip through the previous/next entries of the same author.

I have been thinking of the following as suggestions: * A calendar for us to be able to view our own entries * A default prosebook in everyone's prosebox that lists every entry they write in chronological order. That way, people have the option of reading their favourite prosebook, or every-single-entry an author has written.

The Brat December 05, 2013

one at a time, person by person usually.

Deleted user December 29, 2013

One person at a time, definitely. I needed to be able to click on that person's screen name to organize my thoughts.
