A New AC ! in 2015

Mom sprung for a window AC for me and Cori. The hose from the portable AC unattached overnight last week and leaked all over the new dresser and the floor. We found something called a “low-profile” AC that fits almost the entire window !! It only left about 6 inches of space (our windows are 4 feet wide), so I just taped a piece of cardboard wrapped in foil onto it and it already seems to be working ! The AC is SO MUCH QUIETER, it uses way less energy, and will actually turn off once it hits a certain temperature that we can set, and then periodically it will turn on the fan and check the temp and adjust if it needs to, which means less energy ! We won’t need to run it constantly.

Mom ordered it online from Wal Mart and we picked it up in a store nearby. While we did that, I also got my tires replaced. So expensive. They aren’t anything special–just tires from Tire Discounters. I’m sure they will be fine. My tires are low-profile (can’t believe I’m using that term twice in one entry about two different things) so they are more expensive. But my tires were literally so bald they were spinning on the hills here.

There’s a big commotion about the shooting of Samuel Dubose here… on the one hand, I am certainly inclined to believe that if Dubose had been white, the outcome very likely would’ve been different. On the other hand, what if the prosecutors release the body cam video and it actually does show that the officer was trapped in the door of the car as Dubose was driving away ? Is it still wrong for the officer to have shot his gun ? I suppose you could say he could’ve fired once as a warning or fired into a tire… it was also a UC officer. I keep hearing people say “UC is so far away, why was he here ?” But honestly, the shooting happened almost right across the street from where Cori interns. I’ve been there. It is further from our apartment to UC than it is from UC to the place Dubose was killed. And I see UC cops in our neighborhood, too. Barely more than half a mile is not “far from campus.”

And also, part of me likes the fact there are so many cops. While I feel pretty safe in my neighborhood, Cincinnati is really not a safe city. It’s not, I don’t care what people who have lived here their whole lives tell me. Is it safer than a decade or two ago ? Yes. But Cori interns at a place where, just in the last 8 months, 3 people have been shot and killed, one by an officer and the other 2 by suspects who still haven’t been caught. I could’ve been collateral damage on the highway when those guys shot pistols into the car directly behind me, then pulled up ahead of me and kept firing back, on my birthday of all days.

Part of me wishes Cori could have moved to the DC/MD/VA area (though I’d still probably be living at home, though I do miss my mom), or that I could’ve moved to Minneapolis. Fairfax and Minneapolis are INCREDIBLY safer than Cincinnati. And Fairfax may be near DC, but even DC is safer than Cincinnati (that may not have been the case 20-30 years ago, but 20-30 years ago Cincinnati was worse, too). And same with Minneapolis–its violent crime stats were higher many years ago, but they still paled in comparison to DC and Cincinnati.

I don’t know. I suppose I won’t mind too terribly if we have to stay an extra year in Clifton in this apartment (the apartment is still the best I saw), and I do like a lot of aspects about this area that I didn’t really have in Fairfax, but… yeah… it’s just…

I want to live elsewhere.

Anyway… I do think the video should be released. And God help this city if it seems the cop had no reason to shoot. And I’m inclined to believe that race always plays an issue.
