Beach Baby
Weird things that pop into my head.
This song always reminds me of my almost-first-girlfriend. Who else remembers that weird awkwardness of being 13/14? How things you never thought about were instantly in your head 24/7?
Rhonda looked nothing like Hannah Davis. But those Hannah and her Horse commercials make me think about beaches. Among other things.
And beaches make me think about Rhonda. I wish I could switch out Rhonda for Audrey when I think of beaches, but unfortunately we never visited a beach together. Audrey was born on June 21st, the first day of summer. But forever she will be my winter girl.
Rhonda’s father and my father worked together. I’m an Air Force brat. We were stationed on Guam. I say “we” were stationed on Guam like I had anything to say about it. Dependents just follow their military parent around and occasionally get dumped in a hometown that isn’t your hometown, but rather your parents. I know, the military member doesn’t have a lot of control either.
But on Guam.
We could go to the beach on Christmas day which was a bragging point for Mom.
Rhonda was in several of my classes at Simon A. Sanchez Junior High. Funny how I can rattle off all three High schools I attended. On Guam Junior High included 9th grade.
We played the eye game. You know the one where you look at each other until you realize that the other is looking back, then you look away.
We ate lunch together a few times. Doing that “not really conversing” thing. I was such a dork.
On weekends we kept crossing paths at the beach. Tarague Beach on Andersen AFB.
Two junior High kids who had no clue what we were feeling, but couldn’t stop feeling it.
I know her full name. Who ever forgets that first…
I would try to find her, but these days woman have a tendency of hiding behind their ever changing last names. And forty years has a way of changing people.
Beach baby, Beach Baby give me your hand, give me somethin’ that I can remember.
Thank you Rhonda.
