First Class in Keep Calm and Shimmy

Yesterday wasn’t nearly as intense as the workshop. It was a beginners class. We started with walking on the balls of our feet which was a little weird. Chest bumps, hip drops, tic tocks, shimmies, shimmy slides and transitions.

I still can’t figure out how to do anything but the tic tocks and shimmies. They are fairly simple. Problem is not knowing if my knees are moving because they are making the movements or as a result of the movement. When I try to just isolate the specific parts of my body and keep the rest still, I feel stiff. She says that even though I don’t see it, I’m still moving. The more I practice and stretch, the more exaggerated and fluid the movements will become.

Chest bumps are a pain. I can’t move my diaphragm up without using breath. We know we are doing it right if we can talk while bumping. I’m having a hard time doing hip drops without moving my knees or dropping one side while extending a leg. Ick.

The hardest part is the big mirror. Why do dance studios have mirrors? Everyone there looked all smexy and stuff; I looked like a short and blocky dork. Seriously.

Between working soup kitchen on food bank day and belly dance I am exhausted. I woke up this morning with insane tummy twitches and a carb craving. Discovered there was leftover cake in the fridge.

Cake for breakfast.

There was fucking cake for breakfast.
