For me, anyway. There’s nothing to amusingly whinge about. I mean, there’s always something, but it’s too much effort to make myself momentarily miserable just to be funny.

I am here to write about something, though. A real thing. A weird hippie medicine thing that is totally working.

So, late winter/early spring of last year, I stopped losing weight. Ten pounds short of my goal. Frustrating, but not the end of the world. I was actually okay with that weight, and I figured at 31, I was doing pretty well anyway. Then in July it started scooting UP. For no reason. NONE. My diet, sleep, and exercise habits keep getting better; there is no reason for this nonsense. I eat only when I’m hungry, and other than poor choices made after the kids’ bedtime, I eat all nutritious food (nutrient-dense, lots of protein, lots of good fats, decent amount of carbs, and no added sugar except in one cup of coffee per day). And I’d been making poor choices after the kids’ bedtime even while I was still losing weight, so whatever. If I didn’t eat when I was hungry, I would get weak and shaky, so I also knew it wasn’t just a skewed perception of hunger. I was legit hungry, and you should eat when you’re hungry to the point of shaking, right?

My body says hahahahah at me.

My (skeptic) sister then started posting about how she’d been taking apple cider vinegar daily and how great the energy boost was, among other things. I started reading up on it, and despite all the articles being from suspicious sources (bigpharmawillkillyou.com, hippiesarethebest.org, etc) and having poor spelling and grammar, I decided the worst that would happen is I waste $5 on a bottle of vinegar.

I started with regular ACV because that’s what I had in my house. It didn’t do anything for me, so I switched to the raw, unfiltered kind (the stuff with the silt at the bottom; even Walmart has it, luckily), and boy did I notice a change. Immediately. I mean, that day.

I’ve lost 9.5 pounds, and the first 6 of that was in the first three days.

I eat about half as much as before, and I have more energy. I also have no problem not eating after the kids go to bed. I take a tablespoon in a glass of water every time I’m about to eat. Sometimes I think I’m about to eat, and then I have my vinegar water and realize I’m just fine.

From what I understand (and this may not be science at all, but it fits with what I’ve experienced), it helps your body to turn more food into energy rather than storing it. Which explains how I’m eating far less, but still feeling more energetic.

Anyway, I’m sure this isn’t for everyone. A friend of mine tried it to no effect, but she’s already got pretty low body fat, so I don’t think she needs it anyway. And a couple of people have said they would try it if it weren’t for the taste of vinegar. Personally, I think that’s silly. I would eat asparagus every day if it made losing weight this much easier, but I guess it depends on how much you hate vinegar. I think it’s totally worth it, but of course your mileage may vary.

I know it sounds super weird, but if you’ve been struggling like I have, what is the worst that could happen?
