Sometimes I feel really different from the rest of my family. Well, technically I am different. And it’s all because of my religious beliefs that the rest of them don’t share. I know a year ago I didn’t feel as different because I hadn’t become religious yet.
Megan is visiting right now. She showed up last night. She had no idea that today was a special day for Jayson and me and she didn’t come visit for that reason, but it was still nice to have her around. But when she walked in the door, she started going through her bag and pulls out this stack of DVDs. She hands them to Rachel and says they are “samples” that she thought Rachel and Guy might enjoy. I immediately realize it’s porn. The kids are running around, excited to see their Aunt Megan, so I just comment that Rachel needs to put it somewhere that the kids won’t see it.
And yes, they all are smart enough to know to keep porn away from kids, but they still gave me this eye-roll like I’m the crazy mom who is anti-porn. I am opposed to porn. I wish it wasn’t in my house. But that’s the problem with sharing the house with my sister.
Megan has started to referring to me as “the homophobe.” She says it to my face. It’s kind of hurtful, but I understand that there is always going to be that conflict between us. I’m not apologetic that I don’t approve of homosexuality, and she’s not apologetic that she’s a lesbian. But I hate the term “homophobia” because it implies that there is some sort of fear involved. I don’t fear it. I just don’t think women should have sex with women.
So the reason today is a special day is that Jayson received the Aaronic priesthood at church. It’s important to him and me and completely meaningless to the rest of the family, and I get that. I asked Rachel if she wanted to come to church with us just to witness it. I thought it was a reasonable request. Kind of like going to a kid’s first communion, even if you’re not Catholic. I also fully expected her to say no. But she shocked me and agreed to go with us.
It was really awesome to be able to share that with her.
