Here we are in the world of comic books- we are looking at some of the things going on in television recently.
the D.C. world- The Flash and the Arrow for the second parts of their respective seasons seems to be going off with a bang. First episodes of each, we find out how each are coping with their situations after the cliffhangers from December (“Yellow Flash” and “The Climb” respectively).
In the Marvel world- we note that Agent Carter is going to be a trendsetter for the world of female heroes- and may be a predecessor for the new age of 2015 as we start seeing more diversity in the superhero lineup. Along with that, we have Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continuing to amaze us, with the revelation from last season of an inhuman in Daisy “Skye” Johnson. How this will play out in the new Avengers film coming out will certainly be a challenge, especially if Fox ever gives up the rights to the X-Men franchise. Then, canonically we might call them as the comic book world appropriately calls them- mutants. Which will be a main sticking point for me as I analyze Avengers: Age of Ultron when it comes out, breaking down the worlds of X-Men: Days of Future Past with Peter and Wanda Maximoff versus the Peter and Wanda Maximoff of the Avengers world. Eventually, they will all have to meet to have a true, and epic, Infinity War. Note: that goes for the Fantastic 4 as well, which Fox has also gotten their hands on.
Which begs the question: is Fox ruining our childhood?
In other news, we are getting more news about the D.C. epic clash between Batman and Superman- with more characters added to the roster such as Wonder Woman, and just recently announced Aqua man joining the cast. Played by Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa, will we be seeing a bulkier version of Aquaman compared to the less than sculpted Batman? It might be more like we’re looking at Bane than we would be for Aquaman.
And with that we come to the Suicide Squad- a band of the most treacherous villains in the D.C. world including The Joker, Deadshot, Lex Luthor and Boomerang. As we’ve seen these villains in several television series and movies, it will be interesting how the 2016 film production will make it. Jared Leto will be the Joker, and Will Smith will be playing Deadshot, while Jessie Eisenberg will be reprising his role as Lex Luthor after his appearance in Batman v. Superman.
News like this comes as a shock to the comic book world of film, because we’ll be looking at a new genre of movies that will highlight the super villains, rather than the heroes. Expect a darker tone as we head into this new era of comic book movies.
