On Tuesday, one of my bass players trashed my room. It was nothing terrible. Nothing was broken, but a bunch of my things were scattered on the floor and my desk was a total wreck. i watched the security cameras and found out who it was. lets call him student G. he went into my room after getting his bass, then after rehearsal he showed two students the room. one student (H) told me she saw him make more of a mess. the other student (J) said he only saw my chair knocked over and my desk a mess and that student G said he didnt do it. im not sure i believe student J completely. he was very quick to tell me student G did not make the mess and seemed a little skiddish about the whole incident. of course, student G is denying the entire thing and also stated that student J took a mine craft book out of the trash (which was not there).
i know student G trashed my room. I believe student H that she was brought into the room, but did not participate in trashing my room. i believe that student J did not participate in trashing my room, but I do not believe him when he says student G did not trash my room. i believe that student G told student J what he did and student J probably told him that wasnt a good thing to do, but was afraid of telling me the whole truth because he is student G’s friend.
the worst part about this entire thing? im not allowed to tell the parents that we have this entire thing on camera. i guess because the students were not fully supervised during instrument pick up, we cannot disclose the tape? and for some reason, even if we could talk about the tape, we’re not allowed to show the parents the tape. that is my key piece of evidence! why cant i talk about what i saw??!! this is partly why i hate the NYC school system…the things to do that would make sense dont. i want this kid out of my orchestra and that is becoming difficult because all i have is hearsay evidence from 2 other students, one that says he did it and one that says he didnt. the mom is very upset and we have a meeting with her on monday after break. and honestly, if the other 2 students do have something to do with it, they will also be removed from orchestra. yes, it was a bad decision on all of their parts. but, there needs to be action taken. i cannot have students like that in my ensemble. it doesnt matter what age they are, this cannot happen. it shouldnt matter that they were not fully supervised at the time. they are old enough to know not to go into my room and trash it. they knew what they did was wrong and they did it anyway.
sigh this whole thing just sucks. i really have to get my stuff together and apply at other schools or maybe talk to my boss about switching schools. somewhere closer in queens. now that i have 2 years under my belt, maybe i can start looking in long island as well…somewhere where i will be supported in my job and not have to create evidence in order to get a student removed from my ensemble. sigh
thats my rant for the day! later.
