End of an Era in In the Meadow

Our old car went to car heaven. The transmission went on it. We were leaving a store parking lot and I went over one of those chunks of snow and ice that fall off cars. I heard a thud as it hit the bottom of the car. Then as we got onto the road the car made a terrible grinding noise. I pulled into a parking lot, and the car wouldn’t shift out of drive. I turned it off, put on the emergency brake, and called for a tow truck.

We found out it needed a new transmission. It was a ‘98 Neon with 215,000 miles on it. We decided it wasn’t worth it to fix. I bought that car when I was twenty-two years old. That car and I went through a lot together. It was in New York, Maryland, and California with me.

We thought about taking it to a junk yard and seeing if we could get any cash for it. But we would have had to pay to get it there. We decided to donate it to the Kidney Foundation. They came and towed it away for free. It had some good parts on it, so they should be able to get some value from it. We have another car for now. We are looking for another used car. Probably an older model, just something to get around town in.

Otherwise things have been going well. The musical Kayla is in is really coming together. The kids all participate in the various aspects of the show like set and costume design and putting together the programs.
