As much as I enjoy doing these music-related entries, I don't necessarily like starting these off by bashing the music of today. Oh, today's music is utter garbage and I will maintain that stance for the foreseeable future, but do I really need to say it every single time I do one of these kinds of entries? Maybe I move away from that? These kinds of entries are still kind of new for me, so perhaps I might need to tinker with the format before I have it all set in stone.
But yes, today's music, at least for me, is a hard listen. I struggle with it, to where I look to avoid it whenever possible. This is where the oldies come into play. For this entry, I bring you back to 1965.
For this entry, I present to you this classic, originally performed by Billy Stewart.
I Do Love You
There are three songs by Billy Stewart that I like, though this is probably my favorite of the three. I may do entries for the other two songs in a future music entry. Lyrically, this song is very simple and in it, Stewart doesn't do too much as he belts out repeatedly, "I do love you". The words are simple, but can be so impactful and heartwarming. This song, released in 1965, is just under three minutes in length, which was not unusual for songs written during that era. As I've said before when it comes to these typically short songs, I will listen to this song at least twice in a single sitting.
Tragically, Stewart died in January 1970 in a car accident that claimed his life, as well as the lives of the three other members of his band. Stewart was 32-years old.
As I've also said before, I love music covers, but only when they're done properly. This group, G.Q., took this Stewart classic and truly made it their own. It has a more modern sound to it when compared to Stewart's 1965 release. I want to say that I may have heard this version of the song first, though I do like both versions. The G.Q. rendition of this song was released in 1979, 14 years after Stewart's original, and ends up being almost two minutes longer.
I didn't discover this version until a few years ago, but apparently Barbara Mason also recorded this song. Her version was released in 1968. Mason's version of this song does not disappoint and if anything, it offers a different sound for the song, which I have come to expect to have a male sound to it.
I Do Love You is such a simple, but great song, with its iconic sound and simple, but powerful lyrics (depending on who's listening and perhaps even depending on who the song is being dedicated to).
As I've said before, great music always will stand the test of time. This is just another one of those oldies that is definitely still very much alive, now nearly six decades after Stewart's tragic and untimely passing.
Because I love you so bad now
