Dear A,

I went to the gym expecting it to be quiet, but by the time I got changed and out onto the floor, every treadmill was taken except one. I started an incline walk on it and then, about five minutes in, the machine suddenly cut out and refused to start again. I felt lost after that, standing there not quite knowing what to do next because there were no other treadmills free. Eventually I found a rowing machine and spent twenty minutes on that instead. Tonight, though, my legs are aching for it, especially the inside of my thighs.
After I grabbed a new toothbrush in the pharmacy—plus a quick perfume sample—I headed to the pet shop for a pull toy, a card, and a treat. The dog’s party had sandwiches and chatter, but I’ve never liked small talk. I ended up talking with a few people about my horrible job interview on Wednesday. They recounted very similar experiences with that company—the same formal vibe, the same lack of interaction. It actually made me feel a little bit better, realising it wasn’t just me—it’s clearly just how that strange company do things. While yapping, I felt that familiar painful tension building in my neck, shooting up and down. By 4 p.m., I had had enough and headed home.
I got back, watched TV with a chicken wrap and a Diet Coke, and realised I was exhausted. I climbed into bed at 9:30, more than ready to put the day behind me. How did you spend your Saturday?
