And here we have it. In terms of cosmic relevance, 100 years, a mere blink of an eye. n terms of human counting, forever.
The blooming of Mars was a grandiose adventure. Deimos, the larger of its moons, speeding outwards into the soar system was grabbed by Ceres forcing it to orbit the new moon. Phobos, the smaller moon ended up crashing into Mars creating a massive cloud over the face of the planet.
Inside the cloud, things got interesting. As the core began to spin to life once again, warming the planet, what was trapped, frozen underground began to thaw and within five years of the impact, thunder rolled.
Storms began to bloom on Mars, Under the cloud, under the blanket of Phobos' corpse. Rain began to fall, poisonous sulfur and hydro-chlorides mixed with acidic chemical stews turning the surface of mas into a nightmare landscape of acidic hell.
All seemed lost. Until one day, the clouds parted. In the scorching heat of greenhouse gasses and poisonous fumes, stewing for a decade came something unimaginable... beauty. For all of the menacing compounds that combined and filled the skies and lands, scrubbing the Martian soil clean, they left unfiltered purity behind.
although breathable, Mars's atmosphere was thin. the nitrogen rich soil made it easy to grow crops in the water rich regions of the equator and tree's stood tall, like the California red woods in the carbon dioxide fill air.
Man had created a new Eden. Lush, rich and unclaimed, that is until man did what man does best. The wars that followed were unholy. The body counts were high and Mars drank the blood of the fallen willingly, voraciously, feeding on the nutrients missing from its own new flesh.
As always, mankind brought itself to the brink until a great realization struck him. Earth was not sending any more rockets. there would be no more fodder for the machine. Likewise no one could return to earth. For all the years of living on Mars had changed man. The lighter gravity made them weaker on Earth. The thinner air made it hard to breath the oxygen rich air of Earth. The dimmer light, the composition Mars's water, everything that made man dominate over their planet, was of detriment to those who gave it up to become Martians.
and so it came to pass that there was now, two separate specie in the galaxy. And it was good...
