First and foremost, Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all! I love St. Pat’s day for several reasons, but I really love being in New York City for this special day, as I am now! Flew in yesterday just in time to get to the hotel, change clothes, and catch the tail end of the parade. I actually thought that the parade was today, but I guess being Sunday and all, they decided to do it yesterday.
There are so many things that I hold dear about this parade. The high school marching bands remind me of my own high school band geek years. The bagpipers rock. The music gives me the chills, and I dig looking at the guys in their kilts!! And this year, watching the firefighters and police officers march proudly down Fifth Avenue brought tears to my eyes. I’m really glad that we made it out to see at least a little bit of the parade.
My partner in crime for this trip is a co-worker and now dear friend of mine. Her name is Lori, and she and I love to commiserate about Boss all the time. I’m happy that we’re traveling together. Normally, I do this trip by myself, but it’s just fun to have someone to hang out with and laugh with and party with! But there’s one small hitch in the “party with” part of that last sentence, because Lori had to confess to me yesterday that she’s preggers!!! She told me that she knew I’d be asking her all kinds of questions if she didn’t get all kinds of silly with me on this trip. She knew that I’d wonder why she wasn’t drinking the Sambatinis at Sushi Samba last night, so she had to fess up.
I am so thrilled for her and her husband. They are a darling couple. I celebrated for them all last night!
We met a friend of mine at Sushi Samba, and that’s where the fun began!! Dinner was delish, but poor Lori had to choose her food carefully, as you’re not supposed to eat raw fish while pregnant (I didn’t know this). I started off with the Sambatinis, and ordered a virgin one for Lori so she didn’t feel left out.
The rest of the night was a blur of octopus, salmon, fish eggs, martinis, walking, nightclubs, dancing, more vodka, more bars (of which I can’t remember the names), lounges, cabrides to drop off Lori and some others, and the final destination was a nightcap at the amazing Park Avenue apartment of my friend Stuart’s boss. Stuart’s company is based in LA, but the filthy rich owner of the company needs a place to crash while in New York.
Oh my stars, is this place gorgeous. Gigantic. I’ve never, ever been in such an extravagant apartment in this city. I guess I loved it so much that I felt the need to relax and spread out and fall asleep on the couch! I woke up wrapped in a blanket on the big, fluffy sofa. Stuart was across the sprawling marble-floored living room asleep on a chaise. I woke and shook my head and fell back to sleep until 9, when Stuart had to give me the boot because he had a business breakfast at 10!
It was then that I started my Park Avenue Walk-O-Shame! Ug. 20 blocks of pure embarrassment, starting with the doorman. I suppose I could have cabbed it, but hey…it’s a lovely day, and the crisp air made me feel better. I did end up crossing over to Fifth and walked along Central Park. It was nice. And there’s a lovely market just a block from my hotel where I picked up a giant cafe latte and a sesame seed bagel schmeared with a big glob of cream cheese. Heaven.
Now. I do need to run because I have to meet Lori in a half an hour to get our day started (remember, we work all weekends when we travel. Grumble.
I’m sure there’ll be more to report later.
Time to get my GREEN ON!!
