Okey. In an effort to chill out and stop obsessing about guy and work issues, I decided to start working on some projects over the weekend. In fact, I’ve been meaning to get the ol’ sewing machine out for a long, long time. I used to make tons of my own clothes and gifts for friends, and I guess the fact that I work with fabric and sewing issues professionally now, it takes some of the fun away.
But I’d like to start working on more things. I always feel this wonderful sense of accomplishment when I finish something that actually turns out pretty cool. The problem is when I don’t finish a project, I feel this sense of guilt. I used to have tons of half-finished projects all over the place. Lately, I haven’t even started anything because I don’t really have the room for half-finished projects (that can be taken metaphorically as well as literally).
But now I’m itching. Itching for a project!
What spurred all this? See, I found a great pair of old jeans at a flea market last week while visiting my parents last weekend for Mother’s Day. One crisp dollar got me a great, faded pair of Levi’s…so properly worn, you couldn’t pay less than sixty bucks for better whisker and wash effects. Au naturale…musta been washed and worn 100 times.
Problem is, they’re too big. So I decided to make one of those great faded and frayed jean skirts and cut the seams last night and started pinning the extra fabric to the inside of the leg, and started trying to figure out where the hell I can dart that sucker so that it will fit at the waist and hips!
All that cutting and pinning got me in the mood to run to the fabric store to see if they had any ideas. I couldn’t really find anything, so I decided to leave. As I was walking out, I found this awesome geometric crepe print…just screaming for me to buy it:

Damn.
So then I had to go back to the pattern books to see if I could find anything worth making out of this fabric to justify its purchase.
Of course I found a pattern. A darling little halter dress. You may or may not be able to see from the crappy way my scanner is working this morning, but the little halter part is twisted, leaving a little opening in the center of the dress. I got the fabric and the pattern and a zipper. Now I just have to decide which style to make. I bought enough fabric to make either.
That’s where you guys come in. Do you think that I should make style “A”, with the straight skirt. It falls a little higher than style “B”, which is flared and falls just below the knee…
Either would work for me; I just need to choose before I start cutting!
I think I’m gonna try to finish the jean skirt project before I start this one anyway, so there’s time to decide. But I would like to take this dress with me for the Annual Girls’ Trip (college buddies) in NYC on the first weekend of June.
So there. An entry that’s not a rant about work or a bitch about guys!
Is that a first for me? Quite possibly.
