Oy vey! What an exhausting, exciting, emotional long weekend! I know words cant really convey the ups and downs of the Annual Girls Trip in New York City this year. I will say that I did have a fabulous time with all seven of the other girls, and the whole trip was very much worth it. I will also say that we will never do NYC again!
Theres simply too much to do in the Big Apple! And theres no way to get eight strong-willed, large-egod, varied personalities to agree on places, events, times, modes of transportation, eating and sleeping schedules, or even how to translate a phone message! I swear, we argued about stuff way more than we agreed.
And can I just say, for those who dont know
.when eight women who survived the non-stop party that was college together congregate once a year, they turn into the most foul-mouthed, giggliest, crudest, wildest, loudest, messiest, obscene-ist, most obnoxious group of people ever. At least we do anyway. Oh my gawd. We were awful! But we make no apologies! This trip is for US to get all of our pent-up crap out.
And get it out we did! Highlights include:
Gettin my party on with my girls! Every night! Every day! And with no terrible side effects like hangovers or guilty feelings! Im just so happy when we get together. In fact, I noticed that Im pretty much on a natural high on these trips and dont need so much artificial pick-me-ups. We have such an amazing dynamic and we all play right off of each other. I mean
Im actually quite funny when were bouncing around together! Whee!
Meeting a tip-top NBC executive (we have some major connections within our group) in his office at the NBC studios and getting a very special tour! Too bad nothing that we were familiar with was taping at the time (except the Today Show). The tour included running rampant in all the studios (Dateline, Conan, Rosie, NBC Sports, SNL!!!). We sat at Conans desk and interviewed each other and went crazy on the SNL stages (even came out from behind the door n stuff!). We posed for photos all over the Today Show set and waved at the people looking in the window and wondering who we were! Hah! We talked about pitching our sitcom idea to the NBC exec. Picture this: eight college buddies who get together once a year at a different vacation destination and all the hilarity that ensues each time they meet! Every season could be a new location! Phenomenal, eh?
Downtown. Started to take a walking tour of the Financial District, but were so distracted by some jackhammers and annoyed that the tour guide tried to talk over them, that we decided to break off and give ourselves the tour. Ended up at Ground Zero. I could write many entries about my thoughts and feelings when I went to see that horrible hole in the ground. I was so angry and so heartbroken all at the same time. It was eerie and strange and I was saddened to see some people treating this now-sacred burial ground as a tourist attraction
posing in front of the cranes and the hole with smiles on their faces. I dont know. I felt like everyone should be silent and solemn and they should be paying their respects, not laughing and acting like assholes. As we walked by some police officers, I said something about being overwhelmingly upset and he asked me why. I couldnt get the words out. He handed us tickets to go up on the observation deck. We did. The walls on the ramp of the observation deck gave me chills and made me tear up all over again. Thousands upon thousands of people have signed these walls and written poetry and thoughts and words of sorrow. Beautiful lines. And after paying my respects at the top of the ramp and saying a silent prayer, I walked back down the other side of the ramp and saw the rest of the wall covered in flowers and photos and the names of all the people we lost. So sad. So very, very sad. I am pissed off all over again.
Broadway. Saw Chicago. I so rarely go to the theater. It was a wonderful experience to share with the girls. The funniest part was their reaction. Especially since one of the girls was trying to get us to party, party, party before we left
and she ended up falling asleep in her chair! Another girl got sick and had to leave midway through the show. It was the start of a long line of illnesses
and some ill feelings as well.
The long series of miscommunications. Ugh. I swear. Our group was like one big game of
whats it called? When the first person in line whispers a message in the next persons ear and it goes down the line and gets all fucked up and by the time the message makes it to the last person, the message is completely different. Yeah. That was our mode of communication for some reason. Because not everyone chose to carry a mobile phone. Which is fine. I understand that. But when people start splitting up and going their own way, its hard to tell the group whats going on without getting all screwed up. I tried to get us all to go to a particular joint in SoHo (Theos) at the suggestion of a (hot) friend of a friend who was going to meet us at 10:30 on Saturday nite. Well
.everyone else went to the Upper West Side (millions of blocks away!) and wouldnt budge (or so I thought) on the SoHo deal. Turns out, the plan was 100% screwed, so by the time we all got our shit together and went up to the venue on the UWS and then back down to Theos, dude was nowhere to be found! Things of this nature happened time and time again on this trip. Some peoples feelings were hurt and others were pissed off. Yes, there were even tears shed because of this!! Not mine, but it was annoying as hell.
But wait
theres more!
