A note regarding the previous entry: my friend who sent the e-mail is a native Indian (from India), has lived all over the world, including South America, Europe, Africa, and most recently, Southern Asia. He has only visited the United States for business reasons, so he is not culturally enmeshed in American ways, but he knows them and understands them amazingly well considering the short stints he’s had here. His ability to adapt to his surroundings is quite astonishing, so I can certainly see him interacting in this Sri Lankan community with a fair amount of ease and agility (as much as one could possibly have considering the circumstances).
I do realize that trying to create and administrate his own relief project is daunting to put it more than mildly, and my guess is that he will end up having to link up with some other sources or organizations to make any kind of dent in the clean-up/relief effort, but I admire his resolve and am relieved to know that whatever I can do to help him is going to directly touch those people who he’s living with and helping.
To anyone who sent a private note asking for more details, I’ll let you know privately when I get word. He did write me back overnight and thanked me for my concern and told me that hed send more info as soon as he could put it together.
In the meantime, I don’t want to just sit back and wait. I am going to seek out other ways and means to reach out.
Happy New Year.
