Someone broke into one of my storage spaces. I’m not sure when. I haven’t been into the spaces since EXMS moved out. Just wasn’t able to bring myself to do it for some reason.
So one of the spaces has a LOT of old, sentimental stuff that I really didn’t want EXMS to go through while we were living together. So I packed up all the old love letters (yes, I’m extremely sentimental) and photos of old boyfriends, lots of travel pix, notes, papers, etc. etc. and put them into the storage space.
I got a call yesterday from the leasing office asking if I had known that the storage space was broken into. They asked me to check it out and then call the office. I was at work until almost 7.
The storage space is basically a giant room that can only be accessed with a code. The room is divided into small spaces with floor-to-ceiling chain link fence. There are latches provided so that you can add your own padlock. The last time I went into that space was probably a couple of months before EXMS moved out.
When I got there, I was unprepared for the shock to my system. There were papers, letters, photos and old business cards of mine scattered not only all over MY space, but ALL OVER THE WHOLE STORAGE ROOM! Everywhere!!
Someone had gone through each and every box and basically turned everything upside down. It was a total mess, and I felt so strangely violated. A lot of pix were torn. Not really in half or with any rhyme or reason…just basically torn because everything was tossed around.
Interestingly enough, I had several journals packed in boxes as well, including a bound print-out of my very first OD diary (pre-download era). I called myself SoNso back then. WOW. They appear to not even be touched.
I don’t think it was EXMS. I think it was either kids or some asshole looking for something valuable ($$$$-wise). I have no idea if they did take anything because I don’t think there was anything worth any monetary value (except there was a metal box FULL of old European cash–Francs, Marks, etc…pre-Euro, not taken). But I do know that it is just such a weird, creepy feeling to know that someone had a hey-day with my precious “junk”.
I picked things up as best I could and put everything back into the storage space and closed the gate/door. I called the leasing office and left a message. I haven’t been back because I’m just not quite ready for the true clean-up yet. I need to do it this weekend, but my heart is just kind of sunk.
Ick.
