Open letter to OD staff in OD

I read the message you posted to Open diary and have written an entry about it. You can find that here

However, on of the notes I got worried me. This is why I am sending you this letter (which I’m also going to post a copy of in my diary). I have discovered that you let the people at Open Diary Plus know when the URL change is going to take place. You failed however to let us who don’t have OD+, for whatever reason (unable to justify the expense in my case), know. I only found out because the person who left me the note was kind enough to let us know what is happening.

Is this a sign of the way things are going to be from now on? Is my fear that technical difficulties on OD will be ignored for longer while you concentrate on the smaller site? (And don’t say it’s not smaller. With a limit on the number of diaries at OD+ and with less that 2000 diaries at the moment, it is smaller.)

You also let OD+ users comment on the changes. We did not get the same chance, hence the number of entries dedicated to this topic. We can’t leave a comment in the announcement on OD+ as you have blocked anyone without an OD+ account from even reading the entry.

I want to stay with OD. I have been there for just under 2 years and have interacted with some people who I would consider friends. However, I have started another on-line diary just in case OD closes down. The person who runs that site has announced that he is expecting a lot of people to move over there from OD. This neglecting to give us information cannot be helping.

There appears to be one thing you have forgotten. If it were not for OD, you would not have been able to set up OD+. Now, you are treating us like second-rate people, even forcing a URL change onto us which is going to cause problems all round.

The best way to get money for OD (as I and other people have said) is to make it so that we have to click onto a banner to save entries. Even if you only get a small amount per banner clicked on, with the number of entries made a day, you would easily make more money than at the moment.

Will you at least think about what I’ve said?

Yours faithfully,

William Forbes
