On Friday night I went to the rock night at The Palace nightclub as per usual, after borrowing money from my mother.
I went to get a drink from the bar and I saw a hand made sign behind the bar saying “Good bye everybody”. I asked the barperson what it was about and was told that it was the last night the club would be open.
This club has been “closing” for years now. Barely a week went by without the club closing, being refurbished, bought, bought and sold, bought and refurbished, bought and closed while they revamp the place. Closing in such a loy key way is strangely fitting and ironic.
I started going there for Mudd Club, Aberdeens longest running student night out. So well established that even the two students unions would not run events on a Monday night as they would not be able to compete. It’s been running so long that my sister remembers going to Mudd about 11 years ago and it had been going for about 15 years before that.
The main room is huge. The building is falling apart. I was once told that the light was dripping on my jacket. One of the male toilets had broken and the water was coming through the light fitting. Birds kept getting caught in the roof and dying.
The lager was possibly the worst lager I have ever tasted. I think it was made of water, methylated spirits and a hint of lager flavouring. It may have tasted crap but you knew, from your hangover, where you had been when you woke up the next day.
But it’s all of this stuff that made the place what it was. I have no idea if they are planning to refurbish the place (I have heard various rumors about what they are planning) but if they do I hope they change the name. Cos it won’t be the run down, bad lager serving Palace I remember. And it won’t be as good.
