Note: as with last year, this list is of films I’ve seen on the big screen this year.
10. Fahrenheight 9/11
Another amazing documentary by Michael Moore, this time looking at George W Bush.
9. Spiderman 2
One of those rare things. A sequal which is as good as, if not better than the original. Would have scored higher if not for the fact that it had a lot of similarities to Superman 2
8. Shrek 2
Another sequal which was just as good as the original. Inspired casting to get Antonio Banderas to play Puss in Boots.
7. Ju-On
Once again, proving that Asian horror is the best in the world right now. Scarey, strange, I’ve seen it twice and I think I can understand it now.
6. The Incredibles
Not only the animated treat of the year, but one of the best superhero films I’ve ever seen. Fantastic. What will Disney do once they lose Pixar?
5. Super Size Me
Easily the best documentary of 2004. An inspired and loopy idea brilliantly executed. If this doesn’t win the Oscar, there is something wrong.
3. (Joint) Big Fish/Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
In my Big Fish review I stated that if it wasn’t my top film this year, it would be remarkable. Well, it’s joint 3rd. Tim Burton and John August really surprised and delighted me with this wonderfull tale.
Harry Potter and the Prisnoner of Azkaban is quite simply the best of the films right now. The best thing Chris Columbus the producer did was hand the directing reigns over to Alfonso Cuaron.
1. (Joint) Before Sunset/Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind
I was fortunate enough to see Before Sunrise over Easter. Before Sunset was perfect. Amazing written, directed and acted, it had the claustrophobic atmosphere needed.
I am a huge fan of Charlie Kaufman. Eternal Sunshine is more inspired genius from the man. He should pick up another Oscar nod. And if there is any justice in the world, Jim Carey should be handed the best actor award right now.
Honourable mentions
The only thing keeping Shaun of the Dead of this list is that I didn’t actually get round to seeing it on the big screen. Lost in Translation was good, but not worth the hype, frankly. But Sophia Coppola has talent. She should go far. Saved was a fun, enjoyable romp and Garden State has made me deeply jealous of the talent Zack Braff has.
