While Americans view what they call football as a bastion of traditional hypermasculinity, anyone watching the sport cannot help but notice some deeply queer undercurrents.
The game involves a bunch of guys tackling and piling on top of each other. Players are called tight ends and wide receivers. Commentary includes terms like "penetrating" the line, "sacking", and "scoring" in the "end zone," which sounds like chat you would hear at a bar called The Manhole in Soho.
Then there is the hugging, ass grabbing, and enough dancing in the end zone for a Busby Berkeley musical. Throw in some jazz hands and screaming, "Faaaaabulous!" and the picture is complete.
