It rained for most of the day today. That wasn't a surprise, being that rain had been in the forecast for much of the week. I believe there was a over a 90% chance that rain was going to fall today and indeed, this rain definitely fell. Prior to the rain that started to hit the region a week ago, there was no hint of cold. Temperatures still lingered in the 70's and 80's, as though we were getting ready for the spring to summer transition, rather than anything that would have resembled winter. The hoodie that I would throw on early in the morning, at 4:30am or so when I'd leave the house, would become a fashion nuisance come 11am and I'd be forced to take it off or risk getting it drenched with sweat. Needless to say, at least in theory, today's rain and accompanying cold were welcome.
As much as I enjoy an occasional downpour, what I don't particularly care for is how technology seems to fail whenever all of this water falls from the sky and lands on the ground. The ground doesn't even have to flood in most cases either. As has been the case for just under five years, whenever it rains here for an extended period of time, sometimes the electricity will go out. It doesn't usually stay out for more than a few minutes, though what can happen is that the electricity might cut out multiple times in the course of a half hour or so. Because I live in an area that doesn't have good internet signal, at least for Verizon users, it almost feels like I'm living off the grid when the power goes out because I lose the benefit and services of my internet router. I hate to call that router a lifeline, but because the native internet signal around here sucks and is wholly unreliable unless I drive half a mile down the street in either direction, I'm kind of a sitting duck without a working router. Because of the electricity's instability today, I would intermittently lose my router and find myself living in 90's again, before the internet was the thing that it is these days. Being that I lived through the 90's and I remember what life was like in those pre-internet years, my life didn't just suddenly stop when the electricity and router both did. I caught up on some reading and did a couple of sudoku and logic puzzles. When the electricity would allow for it, I even turned on my Sega Genesis for some good old retro gaming. Believe me, it wasn't that bad and I was just fine with the internet being down.
With the internet being wholly unreliable today, I struggled to receive and send text messages. Being an introvert, communicating with others via text message is my primary way of interacting with others. Now, if there wasn't anything I truly missed today, it was my ability to interact and engage with friends. What I didn't want to do was give anyone the impression that I was deliberately ignoring them, that perhaps I had fallen down a well, or that maybe I my phone had broken. None of that had occurred, but with my unintentional silence, I can see where I could have accidentally given someone the impression that something bad may have happened to me. Technology sucks when it doesn't work and it's even worse when there is no electricity.
I return to work tomorrow and with that, the holidays are definitely over and finally, life can go back to normal. I'll be in at my normal 4:45am. I anticipate that the office will remain emptier than normal tomorrow, being that I would imagine that many people asked for the day off and were able to take advantage of a five-day weekend. Of course, since not everyone I work with has a brain or sense, I could be completely wrong in making that assumption. Having said that, there might in fact be more people in the office tomorrow than there should be. Regardless, I have a lot of work to do. The number of people who come into the office tomorrow has nothing to do with how busy I'm going to be.
The forecast says that it's going to rain again, not only tomorrow, but supposedly through the coming weekend and into early next week. I'm truly hoping that the internet at home doesn't fall victim again to the pouring rain. Of course, I'd also prefer that the electricity not go out sporadically like it chose to today. I remain hopeful, as I tend to do. I can always write by hand, if need be, but do I really need another reminder of how life used to be before the internet?
That'll do it for now. I have to get up early tomorrow and get back to what I like to refer to as my "normal" life. That means doing my 12 hours at work tomorrow, all of which is overtime.
Indeed, the grind continues. The difference is that tomorrow, that grind might come with a side of rain and a potential power outage.
