I’ve come to think of my time on earth (or wherever this is) in terms of dog years. Next year, I will be 9 and starting another 7-year cycle. My golden doodle (Cheech) lived to be 16. My goal is to be more like Cheech. Eat, sleep, chase rabbits, lay about the house and yard.

After driving over 3800 kilometres across Canada and settling in a valley by a lake in the Rocky Mountains, after looking out at the clouds and how the light reflects off the water and the hills and the clouds, after setting up my future life, a life in progress which means the setting up never ends until life itself does, after visits with the family and meetings with the new neighbours and the neighbourhood, after all that I’ve come to realize that measuring life in 7-year cycles is the right amount of time.

I’ve never been a planner. But I’ve always found myself in a different place at a later time.
