It is rare that I get sick. Sometimes, I truly believe that I might be made of iron. If I'm guessing, it's been just over a year since I experienced even the slightest tinge of a cold. I say "tinge", in that the cold that I experienced last year only inundated me for two days. I was surprised at the time, though I want to attribute my previous resilience to the supplemental Vitamin C that I had started taking at the time. Since that time, I've added a daily dose of Vitamin C to my regular medication regimen and prior to yesterday, it had worked as far as keeping illness at a distance. Yesterday just after 4pm, I sneezed and everything kind of went downhill from there. I felt some congestion wanting to invade my head. I still have those urges to sneeze and every now and then, I'll let that sneeze loose. I feel a slight decrease in my energy level. In general, I don't feel like myself.
I still went to work today, as early as I do. Just after 8am, I left the office, ran some errands, and decided that I'd be better served working from home for the rest of the day. I didn't want to be stuck in the office if I wasn't quite feeling even remotely close to 100%. If I'm playing the percentages with regards to how I feel, I'd say that I'm at about 85% right now. If you're like me, when you're sick and otherwise not feeling well, even the slightest of irritations can make you snap and want to stab someone. In the office, there's always the potential for irritation to occur, so I made the decision to work away from the office today.
Being that I had forgotten to bring my DayQuil with me when I left the house this morning, I decided that I would just visit the local Target and buy myself more daytime cold medicine rather than rush home to get the medicine that I had forgotten. I figured that there was a good chance that I'd need that medicine as the winter progresses, so why not just buy more and have more than enough on-hand? I prefer to visit Target before 9am, if I can do it, being that I hate crowds and people in general. I got to Target this morning just before 8:45am.
I want to say that this is the standard layout of most Target stores, but the local Target around here has two entrances/exits, one on each side of the store. The west entrance is nearest the grocery section of the store. For some reason, the east entrance had a long line in front of it. This would prompt me to enter the store through the west entrance, which I rarely do, but I wanted nothing to do with whatever that long line was for. For whatever the reason and in the years that I've been frequenting this Target, I've always favored the east entrance. I just have. Old habits die hard, I suppose, but crowds will always make me change things up when necessary.
Gloria had tasked me yesterday with finding a birthday card for Morie, so I figured I'd see if I could find one. I must've spent maybe 10 minutes looking for what I would have deemed to have been the perfect birthday card, but in the end, that card never presented itself and I gave up. I found the cold medicine I was looking for. Actually, that's not entirely accurate. I was looking for actual DayQuil, but ended up settling for the Target brand of daytime cold medicine. It was supposed to be stronger and concentrated than the Dayquil I was looking for, so I decided to give it a whirl. I added a Snickers bar (to facilitate the medicine going down), a bag of Funyuns, and a bottle of Mountain Dew to that cold medicine and I was ready to go. With that Snickers bar and Mountain Dew, you wouldn't think that I was a diabetic, but there you go. Every now and then, I'll experience a sugar craving. It seems that whenever I'm sick, those sugar cravings seem to hit harder than usual.
As I'm at the cash register waiting for the Indian man behind the counter to scan my items and process me through, I looked over to the Starbucks directly in front of me. Everyone in line at the Starbucks looked to have some kind of Starbucks cup in hand. I'm assuming that this was one of those Starbucks seasonal cups, which likely came out today. That's what the long line was for, people waiting to buy a damn cup.
I'm not trying to make fun of anyone because they want to wait in a long line for stuff. I know that years ago, I was not against waiting in front of GameStop awaiting the midnight release of the latest Madden NFL game or the newest entry in the Call of Duty series. Maybe my priorities are a lot different than most, but I will never ever waste my time waiting in a line for a fucking cup, any kind of silverware, or anything that I can put a beverage in. I'll buy a video game at midnight though and have no qualms doing it. Waiting in a long ass line for a damn cup? Can't do it. Won't do it. I don't go to Starbucks anyway, being that I'm not big into coffee or much of what's on their menu. Now, if we're talking Dutch Bros., I'm listening.
Target was fun. It wasn't too busy, which is exactly how I like it. Before leaving the parking lot, I took that cold medication along with that Snickers bar. It's not unusual for me to chase medication with chocolate, even when I'm taking my diabetes medication. Clearly, I'm not the best diabetic. Sometimes, I don't even try to be, which was definitely the case this morning.
I worked from home, as I had intended, though I'll admit that I was minimally productive. Given the way I was feeling, I don't think I would've been that much more productive had I remained in the office. I'm hoping to make up the difference tomorrow, assuming that this current cold/illness doesn't get worse come tomorrow morning. Today would have been a struggle had I stayed in the office and tried to work. I'll have my medication on me tomorrow, so that I can try and do my typical 12 hours of overtime on Friday.
We shall see how tomorrow will be. My mundane life continues. The only difference for the moment is that I'm currently under the weather. Sometimes battling illness is really the only excitement I ever experience in my life, that is, outside of whatever might be taking place in my gaming world.
I still managed to get in a game or two of Battlefield 6, by the way.
Priorities. Mine look to still be intact.
