I took a late afternoon nap and then barbecued hamburgers and sitting on the gossip bench, had a big glass of dark beer. The sun had set and the patio lights clicked on and I thought, “it is getting dark so early already.” I always set the timer on my phone when I am barbecuing. I don’t wander far from the grill except with my mind.
The ginger ale I had after the hike had calmed my heartburn. I drank it fast and burped out the gas as silently as I could. The bakery was busy and noisy with customers and we sat in the window and shared a fruit muffin, cutting it in half with a white plastic knife on a white paper napkin.
We had met an old couple at the Wise Old Man Tree and the lady had offered to take our photo. I don’t know how it started but we ended up talking to them for ten or fifteen minutes. Our connections were thin. Two or three degrees of separation. If we had of met in Italy or Istanbul it would have seemed fated.
