乾麵 in Book Two

When I’m in Taiwan, I eat all of my meals in restaurants. They are diners really, or food stalls in some cases. They have fresh, hot food and cheap and battered tables and stools. In Asia, eating out is cheaper and more interesting than cooking at home. In fact, it is motivating too, going out for breakfast early, to beat the crowds, getting a seat. And as I go out for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner (I usually eat 2 meals a day), I have become a regular. I know the ladies at the breakfast place. They ask me how long I’m staying in Taiwan. The brothers at the chicken rice place know my order. “Big chicken rice” they will call out in Mandarin when they see me. And the ladies at the market noodle place are trying to teach me Taiwanese. I’m hopeless with this.

I guess what I’m getting at is that it is fun to be part of a community. We are like a family. We have our ongoing interactions. We are part of each other’s lives. I miss that when I am in Canada.
