So I installed a new door for our backyard. It was a nightmare and a half I tell you. 0/10 don’t recommend doing yourself.
But I wanted Bear to have a puppy door to the backyard so he could go in and out all he wanted. And our current door was a full glass window door so there was no where to put one. After doing some research I realized that any door that had a doggie door built in was either a half lite or a solid door, so either just a small window or no window at all.
Bear is pretty small so he doesn’t need a big opening, so it makes more sense to have a 3/4 lite door and just a small puppy door at the bottom. So I just bought a 3/4 lite door and installed the pet door myself. Felt weird cutting into a brand new door we haven’t even used lol.
But Bear loves it. He’s been going out, checking things out, then coming right back in all weekend! Totally worth that hassle.
Only thing left is the paint and boy did I screw that up. The plan was to paint the outside a dark blue and the inside white. But I brainfarted and started painting the outside white and was done with the first coat by the time I noticed.
So I figure “eh no big deal I’ll just paint over this”… wrong. It got horribly streaking and gross because the white paint hadn’t fully cured yet so now it just looks like a gloopy mess. Ugh.
So the plan is now to wait a day or two for the paint to cure a lot more, sand off as much as I can, and then try again. Really annoying because I wanted to be totally finished today but it is what it is.
And another harsh lesson I learned was proper prep. I had some plastic on the floor but didn’t have enough and some paint got on it. I got the steam mop out to pick it up later and it definitely got the paint off, but it also succeeded in stripping a bit of the varnish off the floor. So now there’s are these blotches of dull varnish. I think I can just put some sealer or something over the top to make everything match. Otherwise we’re just gonna put a rug over and it and ignore it haha.”
But yeah just pay someone to put a door in. 0/10.
