Beginning of Rant....
I was wondering why my apples never seem to spoil. As a kid I remember fruit rotting if it was eaten. So I went down the rabbit hole again and thanks to my son doing his own research into it all, I did some snooping of my own and this is what I found.
What to know why fruit etc doesn’t spoil. It is covered with a thing called Apeel
Apeel claims to mimic the natural waxes found on produce, but this isn’t the full picture. The truth is, Apeel is two chemicals applied to the surface of our food:
InvisiPeel—applied before harvest, acts as a fungicide and pesticide.
EdiPeel—applied after harvest, forms a physical barrier that slows down spoilage.
While these products may extend shelf life, there’s a big question: at what cost? By reducing spoilage, we may be delaying the inevitable—and masking the problem of food overproduction, unsustainable farming practices, and supply chains that prioritize profits over sustainability.
Apeel’s Questionable Ingredients
Here’s where things get really concerning. Apeel claims to be “made from food-based ingredients,” but these so-called ingredients are far from what you’d expect to find in your kitchen. The list includes:
Glycerolipids (from processed vegetable oils)
Mono- and DI-glycerides
Amides, thiols, ethers, and alcohols
Carboxylic acids and aliphatic waxes
Salts (inorganic and organic)
Trans fats (yes, you read that right—trans fats)
While these ingredients may be “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS), they haven’t been tested together—only individually. This means we have no idea how they interact once combined in a coating that’s designed to be ingested. What does this mean for our health, gut microbiome, and long-term wellness?
The organic version contains just 0.6% citric acid. The other 99.4%? Unlisted. Does this sound like full transparency to you
Call me a conspiratist if you want, but it seems to me this is all about control. Instead of encouraging communities to grow their own food, this product is about reducing spoilage in the industrial food supply chain. It’s another step toward corporate control of what we eat, and it’s all about profit, not people.\
Why invest in local fruit trees or sustainable agriculture when you can spray a chemical coating on food to extend its shelf life? And don’t even get me started on the lack of long-term safety studies on Apeel’s effects on human health, soil ecology, and the environment. No one has any idea what this stuff might be doing to our bodies or the planet.
Oh and in Europe, Apeel is only allowed on produce with inedible skins, like citrus, avocados, and bananas. But in Australia and the U.S., it’s sprayed on everything—including the produce we eat directly.
It’s a classic case of “Do as I say, not as I do.” The EU is being cautious, while the U.S. and Australia are allowing this potentially risky coating on all fruits and vegetables—with zero transparency for consumers.
In Australia, restaurants, cafés, and food processors can use Apeel-coated produce without ever having to disclose it. This lack of accountability is nothing short of dangerous. You deserve to know what’s on your food
And take a wild guess who funded the original research on this. Mr. Bill Gates, who I would trust anything he does or says.
End of Rant.
