My garage door opener died a couple weeks back and I’ve been lazy about getting a new one because I have no clue how to install one so I’d invest a lot of time to be sure I get the right one and that I can install it properly.
Well today I decided to take apart the old one to see if it’s fixable and sure enough the part that broke was out in 5 minutes. Replacement parts are 25 bucks on ebay. Way cheaper than a new unit.
Now I try not to be that guy that says “they don’t make em like they used to” because a lot of things are legitimately better than they were. For example cars. Cars are safer, last longer, and are more fun to drive. It aint perfect tho, they’re getting more complicated to work on and they are more expensive than they were.
Anyways, I always suspected this garage door opener was old, but after pulling it down I realized it’s original to the house.. manufactured in 1992. Somehow this thing lasted over 30 years, and once I replace that part who knows how much longer it will last. So at the very least, garage door openers were pretty well made back then.
Now that I have it apart I’m seeing some other parts that look a bit worn so I’m gonna look into replacing those two before I reassemble and hang it back up.
