OK, so it’s not the best job in the sense that it’s not management and it’s not super close to my apartment and it messes up my plans to go home for Thanksgiving and possibly also Christmas, BUT…
I got hired at Sephora at Kenwood Towne Center ! Literally offered the job only a couple hours after being interviewed. The lady who interviewed me, Rachel (like me !), said that although I technically need to be put into the system as a seasonal hire, she said personally she would love to have me on board even longer (by the way, she said she called my first reference, which is the amazing Chayla, and said Chayla couldn’t sing my praises enough !) and said after the season ends, she will offer me the chance to re-interview as a core team member.
She also said obviously my supervisor experience makes me a great candidate for a management position in the future. I start next week, just two shifts, and then officially start the first week in November. I make what I made at Jacadi in 2008 (and 2012…) but they also get huge bonuses that she said their store always makes and honestly, I was actually going to accept less than what she offered. But she offered what I think is fair for the position and the area, and it’s more than what my wage was set at with the temp agency. Plus I get to WEAR MAKEUP and do my nails and hair and oooohhhhhhh......
She said I will start at cashwrap but with my selling and management experience she wants to move me quickly to something else and train me in other areas, so I will only need to be at the cashwrap to learn how to use the POS system (which is something everyone needs to learn).
I hope this is fun ! Even if it’s not my dream job in the sense that it’s still retail, it’s the first place I applied to (other than LUSH, boo) that I get the job where I WANT to work. I applied to Target 9 years ago this month because it was close to home (didn’t have to deal with any DC highways) and I heard they hired newbies. I sort of fell into the job at Jacadi in 2008 because I went to school with the manager’s niece, and because I worked there I got a second job at a boutique in the same mall from March 2009-October 2009 before they went OOB, and in August 2012 I was referred to 7 For All Mankind by a client of mine at Jacadi who actually worked next door to 7, and then I was recruited by United Colors of Benetton in September of last year… none of these jobs I actually WANTED, despite the fact my favorite of all of them was 7FAM.
But Sephora ?? I have enough nail polish to open my own salon and makeup to last me years.
And I was really worried because I don’t have a cosmetic background and I’m not skinny, but you know… I looked at the girls (and guys) there while I was waiting for Rachel to interview me and I noticed a few things:
1) A couple girls were bigger than I am.
2) I actually think my hair and makeup were better than maybe almost half the women there.
3) They seem to not have a specific footwear rule; I saw boots and flats and fashion sneakers so I won’t need to buy new footwear.
4) THEY WEAR LEGGINGS under their dress (a couple years ago Sephora gave their employees red and black costumes–before that I think they wore all black and some also had aprons). I love leggings, and the best part ? They’re CHEAP.
I really do hope all this works out. I know it’s retail. I know it’s a mall. I know it’s the holidays. But really… SEPHORA.
~Rachel
P.S. For anyone wondering… Cori and I are doing wonderfully. We are, I think, finally “settling in” with our lives together. We did have that “spat” as one beloved reader put it (which is what it was, really) but I have to say that no one raised voices and he was very calm and forgave me, since I was the one who was kind of losing it, and he has done all he can to address the concerns I had. He made an action plan, basically. He wants me to not be concerned about those things anymore. He’s… sometimes I think he’s better than I deserve.
