I have had trouble wondering what to write here, since I’ve promised to be here more often. So while emailing my (senior year in high school) friend, I realized I had pretty much summed up what’s going on with me recently.
We lost track of each other after our first year in college until she was found due to the 50th high school reunion this year. We have emailed each other often since then and it’s like picking up right where we left off. Love that.
“Susan,
Taking a break here and thought I’d chat w/you. I know I’m way behind.
Had a good weekend…..in a very boring way….but I appreciate boring much more now.
Today I did a bunch of cooking…..due to Terry’s karate teaching schedule, 4 evenings a week, dinnertime together doesn’t usually happen anymore. So often I’ll just cook a bunch of stuff and we’ll eat it when we eat it.
Works for me because I’m not much of an “Eater.” I often forget to eat if busy. It just doesn’t ‘do it’ for me…..unlike my daughter and granddaughter, who are major lovers of food. My daughter says I make the best food in the world so, of course, I’ve left her everything in the will.
With all the cooking competitions on tv now, Terry’s become more interested in cooking….also because he’s retired…..just does the martial arts teaching that he donates to the YMCA.
So he’s often my sous chef….and getting better all the time. He no longer chops my onions into microscopic specks! (he’s also a knife lover/collector…so enjoys using them and I don’t)
So today, we used all the items (grocery) that we bought yesterday and cooked a bunch.
I also picked a bunch of pomegranates today…I have an ongoing fight w/the wildlife up here, getting to my stuff before me. They lost: 4 poms to my 10! Have the same fight w/my fig tree. All Italians have to have fig trees, my brother informed me so now I do.
Don’t want to shame my ancestors.
I love pomegranates…..they’re messy but delicious. Now that Martha Stewart taught me how to open them w/less mess/staining, it’s better…..still work and messy but not dangerous anymore.
Altho I do find that I need to eat a lot before my daughter comes over. I’ve offered her many pomegranates which she refuses. She can’t fool me….it’s far better to just come over and get into Mom’s stash of already prepared fresh seeds. I didn’t raise any dumb kids.
I tried growing apples but we just don’t have the right climate here. But once traveling thru mid-California in the fall, we tasted REAL apples from a tree…..as opposed to out of the stack in the Produce department in the market…….Huge difference. But, so far, all I’ve gotten are little puny mini apples……all 3 of them!
But being So Cal, we have lime, lemon, orange, rosemary and grapefruit trees, scattered around. The Poms and Figs were planted by us.
She sent me pix of her kids, The Most Beautiful Of All Grandchildren, at a Halloween Party they went to today. I’ll attach 2 so you can see how gorgeous and sweet they are…..if you don’t see it, just pretend you did……I’m sure I’m not biased at all.
Do you have any more concrete plans about coming out here in November? I knew it was a distinct possibility and I’m counting on that. I’d so love to see you. It’s been wonderful, just chatting back and forth since we found each other. Truly, the best thing that resulted from the 50th reunion!
What if we actually get together in person and have nothing to say???
Nope, that couldn’t happen…we’ve always had something to say to each other.
Take care, Susan.
Love you.
(I’d post pix but 1 don’t know how and 2 not sure if my daughter would want me to)
