Like many days, there was a pile of repair tickets for me to sort through upon arrival to the office. But unlike most days of this year, I was awoken by the early stages of a cold. Nothing like waking up at 4 AM to get the mind going.

Typical day as a Network Engineer… dealing with massive malware infections, failed drives on production servers,, failing network infrastructure.... thankfully that also means the day goes by quickly.

Then comes the ironic twist of the day, one never expects to meet someone when they are exhausted, nor when they are sick… But if one thing can be learned, it is that life will always throw you a twist or two when you are neither prepared or expecting one. The pledge class arranged for a guest speaker (Professional Speaker as the term is in business circles) to speak to both the chapter and their class on a very broad topic; what to do when you graduate. Boy I wasn’t expecting the curve ball that was just pitched at me… I tell you what…

Hector, the founder of a local think tank, and one time mayoral candidate for a nearby community was here, and he was about to open eyes for these young students in ways that I had been striving to for quite some time. What is your legacy? What are your life goals; your purpose? What do you plan to do with your remaining 20k days (an average of 28k (76 years) days in the average lifetime of a human)… The tone was jovial and the thoughts most provocative.

What you do, defines you; not what you have… My uncle has a saying, “no one takes all their money with them to heaven in the back of a uhaul”. So if we aren’t supposed to gather wealth… then why is it so ingrained in each of us? Can we break the spell of “possessions define self worth”?
